Imagine you're stuck at CERN, the giant atom-smasher in Switzerland. You're surrounded by brilliant boffins all noodling around on their computers, but sharing information between them is a right palaver. That's where Tim Berners-Lee, a bloke with a name that sounds like a law firm, comes in. In 1990, this chap hatches this bonkers idea he calls the "WorldWideWeb" – no spaces, must be important.

Here's the gist: imagine text that's all joined up, like those old choose-your-own-adventure books. Click on a bit, and whoosh! You're off to a whole new page, a whole new world of information. Berners-Lee and his mate, a Belgian fellow named Robert Cailliau, wrote it all down in a proposal on November 12, 1990 – the birth certificate of the web, if you will.

Luckily for us all, Berners-Lee wasn't entirely enamored with his first stab at a name for his revolutionary invention. 'Information Mesh' was briefly considered, then wisely discarded. It sounded suspiciously like 'Information Mess,' which wouldn't exactly inspire confidence in casual web surfers. No, Berners-Lee needed something snappier, something that hinted at the boundless potential lurking just a click away. Thankfully, 'World Wide Web' stuck."

The web began to peek out into the wider world in 1991. It started cautiously, a shy handshake between research institutions, spreading first on floppy disks – yes, floppy disks! Imagine the entire internet crammed onto a single, gloriously bendable disk. Sadly, that particular relic of the web's infancy seems to have gone missing, a victim of overflowing filing cabinets or perhaps an overzealous office tidy.

The first web page went live on August 6, 1991. Its first webpage a friendly guide explaining how to navigate this brave new digital landscape. 

Even Berners-Lee, the man who brought it all to life, has a minor quibble with his creation. Those double forward slashes at the beginning of URLs? Apparently, a completely unnecessary addition that, in his own words, 'was totally unnecessary.' But hey, even geniuses are allowed a tiny misstep or two."

PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Religion wasn't quite as clear-cut for Berners-Lee. Raised Anglican, he went rogue in his youth and became, well, a Unitarian Universalist (UU, for those keeping score). When someone inevitably asked the big question – you know, the God one – Berners-Lee's answer was a bit of a paradox: "Not in the sense of most people, I'm atheist and Unitarian Universalist."
