Thomas Jefferson

NAME Thomas Jefferson. He was often referred to by contemporaries as the "Sage of Monticello," a title that reflected his vast intellect and philosophical retirement. 

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third President of the United States. He is world-renowned as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He expanded the United States significantly through the Louisiana Purchase and championed the strict separation of church and state, declaring that there should be a "wall of separation" between the two.

BIRTH Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at the family home, a one-and-a-half-story farmhouse in Shadwell, Albemarle County, Virginia. The third of ten children, most of whom died early in life. (1)

FAMILY BACKGROUND Jefferson's father, Colonel Peter Jefferson, was a land surveyor who was one of the surveyors who helped lay out the Virginia–North Carolina border. 

Jefferson's mother, Jane Randolph, was of old Virginian aristocracy, the daughter of Isham Randolph, a ship's captain and sometime planter. Jefferson and his mother did not have a close relationship. When her house burnt down, his first question was "what about my books?" — it never occurred to him to invite his homeless mother into his own home. (2)

CHILDHOOD Seven of Jefferson's first nine years were spent at Tuckahoe, the Randolph estate on the James River near Richmond. When Jefferson was nine, the family moved back to their Shadwell home. 

When not at school, young Thomas went with his father to hunt deer and turkeys along the Rivanna River. He also liked to go for long walks in the mountains. Colonel Jefferson died when Thomas was 14. (3)

EDUCATION Jefferson began his childhood education under the direction of tutors at the Randolph Tuckahoe estate, alongside the Randolph children. In 1752, at the age of nine, Thomas began attending the school of the Reverend William Douglas, a Scottish Presbyterian minister, where he studied Latin, Greek, and French. He also learned to ride horses and began to appreciate the study of nature.

At the age of 14, in 1757, Thomas was sent to the classical school of the Reverend James Maury, near Gordonsville, Virginia. While boarding with Maury's family, he studied history, science, and the classics.

At age 16, in 1760, Jefferson entered the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, where he studied mathematics, metaphysics, and philosophy under Professor William Small. In 1762, Professor Small suggested to America's first law professor, George Wythe, that he supervise the legal training of the star student. Jefferson studied law with Wythe, who became his friend and mentor. Jefferson was admitted to the bar of the General Court of Virginia in 1767.

CAREER RECORD 1767 — Admitted to the bar of the General Court of Virginia. Lived with his mother at the Shadwell family home and practiced law up and down the Valley from Staunton to Winchester. His client list featured members of Virginia's elite families, including members of the Randolph family.

1769–1775 — Represented Albemarle County in the Virginia House of Burgesses, beginning May 11, 1769 and ending June 20, 1775.

1776 — Principally responsible for drafting the Declaration of Independence, regarded as the strongest and most eloquent writer among the Founding Fathers.

1779–1781 — Served as Governor of Virginia.

1782 — Appointed a peace commissioner to assist Benjamin Franklin and John Adams in peace negotiations, but his ship was icebound in Chesapeake Bay and his appointment was withdrawn.

1783 — As chairman of the Currency Committee, devised the dollar and cents system still used to this day.

1784–1789 — Sent by the Confederation Congress to Europe to join Franklin and John Adams as ministers for purposes of negotiating commercial trade agreements with England, Spain, and France. Departed Boston on July 5, 1784. Served as United States Minister to France between 1785 and 1789. Was present in Paris during the storming of the Bastille and consulted with the Marquis de Lafayette while the latter drafted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

1790–1793 — Served as the first Secretary of State under President Washington. Resigned in 1793 in protest at Alexander Hamilton's attempts to centralize government and what Jefferson regarded as his financial impropriety. Retired to his Virginian farm for the next four years.

1791–1793 — Co-founded the Democratic-Republican Party with James Madison, organized to oppose Hamilton's Federalist Party. The party came to power in 1800 and dominated national and state affairs until the 1820s.

1797–1801 — Served as Vice President to President John Adams after coming second in the 1796 presidential election.

1801–1809 — Served two terms as the third President of the United States.

1819 — Co-founded the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. The university's first classes met on March 7, 1825. 

APPEARANCE Jefferson was six feet two and a half inches in height, large-boned, slim, erect, and sinewy, and was nicknamed because of his tall figure and spindly limbs. He had a very ruddy complexion, red hair that became sandy as he aged, hazel-flecked grey eyes, and a long, high nose. 

He had big feet, wearing size 12½ shoes. 

Jefferson stood and walked straight and, owing to his plentiful hair, with no need of a wig. 

The writer Gore Vidal once observed: "For those who believe the old saw that an honest man must have a direct gaze, I refer them to a contemporary's report that the shiftiest-eyed man he had ever met was Thomas Jefferson." (3)

FASHION In the fashion of his time, Jefferson dressed in a long, dark coat — usually blue, and in summer generally of silk — a ruffled stock or cravat in place of the modern necktie, a red waistcoat, short knee breeches, and shoes with bright buckles. 

Except during his days of courtship and married life, Jefferson paid little attention to clothes. Never a fan of formal affairs, he was often reported to have worn his pajamas while meeting with foreign dignitaries. When he was President, Jefferson made a habit of plainness, both in dress and in matters of ceremony. (3)

CHARACTER Urban and cultivated, Jefferson was courteous, bowing to everyone he met. There was grace in his manners, and his frank and earnest address, quick sympathy, and vivacious, informing talk gave him an engaging charm. On the debit side, he was chilly and impenetrable and seemed cold to strangers. (3)

SPEAKING VOICE Jefferson was a poor public speaker with a thin, fine voice. He talked with his arms folded and hated public speaking so much that he gave only two speeches during his entire presidency — one per term. (2)

SENSE OF HUMOUR Though it is a biographical tradition that Jefferson lacked wit, Molière and Don Quixote appear to have been among his favourite reading, suggesting a taste for comic writing. (3)

RELATIONSHIPS Thomas Jefferson married a young widow, 23-year-old Martha Skelton (1748–1782), described as small and pretty, on New Year's Day, 1772, at the Forest, Charles City County. 

They had six children: Martha Jane, an unnamed son, Mary (called Polly by Jefferson), and two daughters both named Lucy. Four of their children died in infancy. After the death of the fourth child in 1782, Martha succumbed to grief and prolonged illness, dying on September 6, 1782. Jefferson vowed never to remarry. (3)

Mary died in 1804; Jefferson had inscribed on her tombstone two lines from the Iliad: "If in the house of Hades, men forget their dead, yet will I even there remember my dear companion."

Only Martha, his firstborn child, outlived him.

Jefferson also had at least one child, a light-skinned boy called "yellow Tom," with his teenage black chambermaid, Sarah "Sally" Hemings. Sally Hemings was the daughter of widowed planter John Wayles and a mixed-race woman he kept as a slave, Betty Hemings. Sally and her siblings were three-quarters European and half-siblings of Jefferson's wife, Martha Wayles Skelton. She had olive skin and long straight auburn hair, coming to Monticello as an infant as part of Martha's inheritance. (3)

MONEY AND FAME In 1819, Jefferson's close friend Wilson Cary Nicholas carelessly defaulted on a $20,000 bank loan and then died shortly afterwards. Jefferson had co-signed for the loan and was now liable for the debts. Upset and embarrassed, he suffered from gross indigestion for several days. 

By the age of 83 he was completely broke and deeply in debt. He was allowed to sell lottery tickets, the winner receiving the former president's land, but the lottery was not a success and he died in debt. 

Jefferson's all-round genius was summed up by President John F. Kennedy, who once said to his Nobel Prize-winning guests: "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House — with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." (3)

FOOD AND DRINK  After serving as ambassador to France, Jefferson brought back to America a taste for ice cream, which he delighted in serving to his guests.

He also introduced Americans to fried potatoes, having sampled them in Paris; he described them as "potatoes, fried in the French manner" with beefsteak. He returned from France with a waffle iron and a pasta-making machine, which he used to serve macaroni or spaghetti. Jefferson helped popularize "Mac 'n' Cheese" by serving it to dinner guests during his presidency. (5)

Jefferson was an enthusiastic wine connoisseur. During his ambassadorship to France in the 1780s, he made several tours of European wine regions and sent bottles of the finest back to America. Following his return, he attempted to replicate these wines at Monticello by planting extensive vineyards, but a significant portion were destroyed by vine diseases native to the Americas. Jefferson installed a small, innovative shelved elevator at Monticello to carry wine from his cellar to his dining room.

Jefferson planted some of the first Brussels sprouts in America and also grew tomatoes at Monticello — not to eat, but as a curiosity. Not many colonists at the time realized tomatoes were edible; indeed, many Americans feared them to be poisonous. (3), 

MUSIC AND ARTS Jefferson liked to sing and tended to hum or sing as he walked or rode. He played the violin, sang pleasantly, and amassed over 500 pieces of music, including violin works by Corelli, Handel, and Vivaldi. Christmas celebrations at the White House and at Monticello included Jefferson playing the violin for family and guests. He also enjoyed attending operas. 

He supervised his daughter's music education, hiring Frances Alberti, an Italian immigrant, as a music tutor. Jefferson's oldest daughter, Martha, played harpsichord, and his other daughter, Maria, played guitar. (3)

LITERATURE A naturally succinct writer, Jefferson claimed "the most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do." He generally wrote with his "Polygraph," a machine in which an automatic pen inscribed a facsimile of a manuscript. 

Jefferson liked to invent words: "belittle" was one of his most famous coinages, appearing in his 1780 book Notes on the State of Virginia, in which he wrote: "So far the Count de Buffon has carried this new theory of the tendency of nature to belittle her productions on this side of the Atlantic." Surprisingly, Notes on the State of Virginia was the only book Jefferson published in his lifetime.

Jefferson could read and write in six languages — English, Spanish, French, Latin, Italian, and Ancient Greek — and was fluent in more languages than any other American president to date. He also studied and wrote on Old English and had a knowledge of German, Arabic, Irish, and Welsh.

Jefferson was largely responsible for drafting the 1776 Declaration of Independence, being regarded as the strongest and most eloquent writer among the Founding Fathers. He wrote it between June 11 and 28, 1776, from a floor he was renting in a home at 700 Market Street in Center City Philadelphia. In retirement at Monticello, Jefferson gave up reading newspapers almost entirely, writing to John Norval: "I do not take a single newspaper, nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the happier for it." He went further still, declaring: "The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors."

The one exception to his contempt was the advertisements. Jefferson noted, with characteristic dry wit: "Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper." (6)

In January 1815, Congress purchased Jefferson's personal library for $23,950; the 6,500 volumes became the nucleus of the Library of Congress. (3)

NATURE Jefferson experimented with new varieties of grain at Monticello, introduced the threshing machine into the United States, and was one of the first Americans to employ crop rotation. 

He studied and classified fossils at a time when investigation of such objects was in its infancy. 

When exploring a Native American burial mound on his Virginia estate in 1784, Jefferson avoided the common practice of simply digging downwards. Instead, he cut a wedge out of the mound so that he could walk into it, examine the layers of occupation, and draw conclusions from them — one of the earliest significant works of archaeology in American history. 

When he was Secretary of State, a plant was named after him — the Jeffersonia diphylla — because "in botany and zoology, the information of this gentleman is equaled by few persons in the United States." (3)

PETS Jefferson kept a Shetland sheep among about 40 other sheep on President's Square in front of the White House. In the spring of 1808 it attacked several people, killed a small boy, and was referred to Jefferson as "this abominable animal." After being moved to Monticello, the ram was eventually killed, having killed several other rams. 

Jefferson had little tolerance for dogs that harmed his sheep and once ordered one of his sheepdogs to be hanged for mauling livestock. 

Jefferson once had a mockingbird that he taught to peck food from his lips and to hop up the stairs after him. (3)

HOBBIES AND SPORTS Jefferson was an avid collector and player of marbles. 

A good horseback rider, he often rode for pleasure.

SCIENCE AND MATHS In 1783, as chairman of the Currency Committee, Jefferson devised the dollar and cents system still used in the United States to this day. 

Jefferson invented many small practical devices; he is credited with inventing the lever-operated double door opener, still often seen on trains and buses, and the folding chair — both the common type and the shooting-stick type now used by sports spectators. He is also credited with the invention of the swivel chair, the first of which he created and used to write much of the Declaration of Independence. 

Jefferson introduced the threshing machine to the United States and was one of the first Americans to employ crop rotation. (3)

PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Jefferson was a freethinker, influenced by Rousseau and a champion of religious freedom. Like many intellectuals of his era, he was a deist, replacing revelation and tradition with reason. He cut out of his Bible all supernatural elements — including the Resurrection and the Virgin Birth — because he did not accept them, though he approved of Jesus's moral philosophy. The closing words of the Gospels in Jefferson's Bible read: "There they laid Jesus and rolled a great stone to the mouth of the sepulchre and departed."

Jefferson was raised Episcopalian at a time when the Episcopal Church was the state religion in Virginia. Before the American Revolution he was a vestryman in his local church, but he later removed his name from those available to become godparents, as his Deist beliefs opposed Trinitarian theology. 

Convinced of the need to keep church and state separate, he believed unwaveringly in freedom of religion. Jefferson refused to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation and declared that there should be "a wall of separation between church and state." He wrote in his Notes on Virginia: "Millions of innocent men, women and children since the introduction of Christianity have been burned, tortured, fined and imprisoned, yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools and the other half hypocrites."

The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was drafted by Jefferson in 1777 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and adopted by the Virginia General Assembly on January 16, 1786. It became the basis for the establishment clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and led to freedom of religion for all Americans. It is one of only three accomplishments Jefferson instructed to be placed in his epitaph. (3)

PRESIDENCY Thomas Jefferson's path to the presidency began with one of those constitutional mishaps that make you wonder whether the Founding Fathers had tested their machinery before putting it into service. In the election of 1800, Jefferson and Aaron Burr each received 73 electoral votes, producing a deadlock that sent the decision to the House of Representatives. There, legislators spent seven days and 35 ballots proving that indecision can be every bit as strenuous as action. Finally, on February 17, 1801, the House cast a 36th ballot and elected Jefferson the nation's third president.

For his inauguration, Jefferson chose not to arrive in regal splendor but instead walked from his boarding house to the Capitol. This was intended to demonstrate what he called "Republican simplicity"—a refreshing concept in an age when European rulers were still rather attached to crowns, uniforms, and being carried about by other people.

As president, Jefferson presided over one of the greatest real-estate bargains in history. In 1803, he purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for 50 million francs plus the cancellation of debts worth another 18 million francs. The transaction worked out to less than three cents an acre, a price so low that even today it would seem suspicious. The deal doubled the size of the United States and remains the largest land sale ever completed.

The expansion came at a cost for Native Americans. Jefferson's administration also began developing policies that encouraged the removal of Native tribes westward into the Louisiana Territory, setting in motion a process whose consequences would echo through American history.

Jefferson's record on slavery was similarly complicated. He signed the 1807 Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves, ending the legal importation of enslaved people into the United States. Yet he refused to recognize Haiti after its successful slave revolution and supported trade restrictions intended to isolate the new nation. The prospect of enslaved people successfully overthrowing their masters was, from the perspective of many American slaveholders, precisely the sort of precedent they preferred not to advertise.

The federal government was also astonishingly small by modern standards. Jefferson had just one clerk and one messenger to assist him, and because Congress had not yet seen fit to fund presidential staff, he paid both men himself. Today, a White House intern probably receives more administrative support than the President of the United States did in 1801.

Jefferson nevertheless found time for home improvements. He expanded the White House by adding the colonnades that still connect the residence to what would later become the East and West Wings. Their original purpose was not grandeur but concealment: they were designed to hide stables, storage areas, and other practical necessities that might spoil the view. He also opened the White House to public tours, establishing a tradition that has endured ever since except during periods when the nation found itself occupied with the business of war. 

Jefferson carried his preference for simplicity into the White House. He disliked grand titles and preferred to be addressed as "Mr. Jefferson" rather than "Mr. President," a modesty that was easier to maintain in an era when the federal government consisted of roughly the number of people now employed to manage a medium-sized airport gift shop.

His dinner parties were conducted with similar care. Jefferson limited gatherings to about 14 guests, having concluded that this was the largest number that could comfortably sustain a single conversation. The goal was to ensure that everyone could participate without being stranded at the far end of the table discussing the weather with a distant cousin of someone's brother-in-law. At a time when formal dinners often fragmented into competing conversations, Jefferson preferred a more democratic arrangement.

POLITICS Between 1791 and 1793, Jefferson co-founded the Democratic-Republican Party with James Madison to oppose the Federalist Party led by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. The party came to power in 1800 and dominated national and state affairs until the 1820s when it faded away.

Jefferson and George Washington had a poor relationship. Their enmity stemmed from the last year of Washington's second term, when Washington suspected Jefferson of being responsible for scurrilous press attacks on him. Jefferson denied responsibility and Washington accepted his word, but a chill remained between them. Jefferson chose not to attend ceremonies marking Washington's death in 1799 and wrote no note of condolence to Washington's widow.

Jefferson resigned as Secretary of State in 1793 in protest at Hamilton's attempts to centralize government and what he regarded as Hamilton's financial impropriety. He retired to his Virginia farm for the next four years. (4)

SCANDAL Jefferson's presidency was dogged by persistent allegations that he slept with enslaved women. On October 19, 1796, the Gazette published an article accusing him of carrying on an affair with his enslaved chambermaid, Sarah "Sally" Hemings, noting they had "heard the same subject freely spoken of in Virginia, and by Virginia Gentlemen." Jefferson himself never publicly denied the allegation. DNA evidence published in 1998 strongly supported the conclusion that Jefferson fathered at least one of Hemings's children. (4)

Thomas Jefferson, who wrote that "all men are created equal," enslaved over 600 people across his lifetime, freed only five during his lifetime, and retreated from his early calls for gradual emancipation under pressure from Virginia's planter class — with the remaining enslaved people at Monticello auctioned off after his death to pay his debts. 

MILITARY RECORD As Governor of Virginia during the Revolutionary War (1779–1781), Jefferson faced severe criticism for his handling of British raids on Virginia, including the near-capture of himself and the state legislature by British cavalry under Banastre Tarleton in 1781. A subsequent legislative inquiry was initiated but ultimately dropped, and Jefferson was exonerated. (2)

As US Minister to France between 1785 and 1789, he was present in Paris during the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, and sent detailed eyewitness accounts back to John Jay, the US Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Jefferson was deeply sympathetic to the revolutionary cause, though he deplored the violence even before the full horrors of the Reign of Terror became apparent. He left France in September 1789, before the Revolution descended into its bloodiest phase. (7)

As President, Jefferson was determined to keep the United States out of the Napoleonic Wars and laid out seven formal principles of neutrality before Congress, thanking Providence for keeping America from "hastily entering into the sanguinary contest." However, his attempts to enforce neutrality led to serious problems. When both Britain and France began seizing American merchant ships, Jefferson passed the Embargo Act of 1807, banning all trade with Europe. This proved catastrophic — it devastated the American economy, particularly the mercantile Northeast, and was widely regarded as a failure. Jefferson was forced to back down in the last months of his presidency. The trade tensions he left unresolved ultimately helped propel the United States into the War of 1812 under his successor, James Madison. (8)

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS Jefferson was a chronic migraine sufferer. His migraines lasted about a month at a time and recurred roughly every seven years. Each time, he carried on working through the pain. 

Jefferson's health began to deteriorate in July 1825, from a combination of various illnesses and conditions, probably including toxemia, uremia, and pneumonia. By June of the following year he was confined to bed. (3)

HOMES In February 1770, his family house at Shadwell, Virginia burnt down, destroying his library, legal papers, and notes. 

A skilled architect, interior designer, builder, and furniture maker, Jefferson designed his 35-room replacement home at Monticello. Monticello had only two very narrow staircases, as Jefferson considered them a waste of space. 

Among the mechanical contrivances at Monticello was an interior weather vane connected to one on the roof. In its 13 bedrooms, all the beds were simply mattress supports hung on wall hooks. In his study, Jefferson had a revolving chair that enabled him to reach both a desk and a reading stand, and a chaise longue fitted with candlestick holders in both arms to provide light for reading.

On March 17, 1801, Jefferson moved to the White House as the third American President. Jefferson permitted regular public tours of the executive mansion, initiating a tradition that has continued ever since, except during wartime. (3)

Jefferson used a round table at both the White House and Monticello precisely so that no one sat at its head, eliminating any visible hierarchy among his guests. He deliberately seated his guests "pell-mell" — without assigned seats based on social or diplomatic rank — as a conscious rejection of the formal European court customs he had observed and despised during his time in France. (9)

TRAVEL In 1784, Jefferson departed Boston on July 5, taking his young daughter Patsy and two servants, to join Benjamin Franklin and John Adams in Europe as minister for negotiating commercial trade agreements. During his ambassadorship to France in the 1780s, he made several tours of European wine regions. He returned to the United States in September 1789. (2)

DEATH Jefferson was determined to survive until the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. At 12:45 pm on July 4, 1826, he mumbled "This is the fourth?" When he realized it was indeed the Fourth of July, he murmured "I resign my spirit to God, my daughter to my country," and died peacefully. Remarkably, the second President, John Adams, died a few hours later on the same day. Jefferson's remains were buried at Monticello.

Thomas Jefferson took care before he died to write out the inscription for his own tombstone. It listed his great accomplishments — "author of the Declaration of Independence," author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and founder of the University of Virginia — but conspicuously omitted the fact that he had once been President of the United States. (4)

APPEARANCES IN MEDIA  The Jefferson Memorial, a neoclassical monument in Washington, D.C., was dedicated on April 13, 1943, on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson's birth. Situated in West Potomac Park at the southern end of the National Mall, the building is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and features a 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson inside. (10)

Jefferson has been portrayed in numerous films and television productions, most notably by Ken Howard in the 1972 Broadway musical 1776 and its 1972 film adaptation, and by Nick Nolte in the 1995 television film Jefferson in Paris

He appears on the U.S. nickel and the two-dollar bill.

NAME Robert Hooke

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Robert Hooke was a scientist, philosopher, architect, and one of the most versatile minds of the Scientific Revolution. Often described as “England’s Leonardo”, he made foundational contributions to physics, biology, astronomy, microscopy, geology, architecture, and urban planning. He discovered the law of elasticity (Hooke’s Law), coined the biological term “cell”, pioneered the experimental method, contributed early ideas resembling evolutionary theory, and served as leading surveyor to the City of London after the Great Fire of 1666.

BIRTH Robert Hooke was born on July 18, 1635 in the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight, England. He was born into the household at All Saints' Church, Freshwater, where his father served as curate.

FAMILY BACKGROUND Hooke's father, John Hooke, was an Anglican clergyman who served as the curate of All Saints' Church in Freshwater and also ran a small school. His mother was Cecily Gyles (also spelled Cecelie). Robert was the youngest of four children, having two sisters (Anne and Katherine) and an older brother, John. He was seven years younger than his eldest sibling. The family had modest means, though John Hooke senior intended for Robert to enter the ministry. Robert's father held aspirations for his sons to follow ecclesiastical careers, as several of John Hooke's brothers had also entered the church.

CHILDHOOD Robert Hooke was a frail and sickly child, and his parents held little hope that he would survive his early years. He suffered from frequent and severe headaches throughout his childhood, which prevented him from attending school regularly and interrupted his intended program of study for the ministry. As a result, Hooke was largely left to educate himself at home, where he developed his own interests.

Hooke spent his time drawing detailed pictures and working on mechanical instruments. He disassembled and studied the workings of machines, using them as guides to create his own devices. Notably, he constructed wooden clocks and even built a working model of a warship complete with firing cannons. EDUCATION When Robert's father died in 1648, the 13-year-old inherited £40 (a significant sum at the time). He initially traveled to London to become an apprentice to the celebrated portrait painter Sir Peter Lely. Hooke characterized his Oxford days as "the foundation of his lifelong passion for science", and the friendships he formed there, particularly with Wren, remained important throughout his career. CAREER RECORD Hooke's professional career was extraordinarily prolific and spanned multiple domains:

1655-1662: Assistant to Robert Boyle at Oxford

1662–1703: Curator of Experiments for the Royal Society. Hooke was required to demonstrate three or four major experiments every week.

1665-1703: Professor of Geometry at Gresham College with an annual salary of £50. 

1666-1703: After the Great Fire of London in 1666, Hooke was appointed Surveyor to the City of London alongside Christopher Wren.

APPEARANCE No authenticated portrait of Robert Hooke survives, making his physical appearance a matter of historical debate and reconstruction. However, two detailed written descriptions exist from contemporary friends, John Aubrey and Richard Waller.

Physical Build: Hooke was described as being "of midling stature" (medium height) and "something crooked". At approximately age 16, he developed a pronounced curvature of the spine, likely caused by Scheuermann's kyphosis, a condition in which the vertebrae grow unevenly. This spinal deformity caused him to become bent or "awry," restricting his mobility and causing severe, disabling pain throughout his life. He was described as "very crooked" and "despicable" in person due to this deformity. Waller noted Hooke remained "always very pale and lean". 

Facial Features: Contemporary descriptions provide specific details: Hooke had "full and popping" grey eyes that were "not quick". His forehead was described as "large". His nose was "thin, of a moderate height and length". The mouth was characterized as "meanly wide," with a "thin" upper lip. He had a "sharp" chin. 

Hair: Hooke possessed "a delicate head of hair, brown, and of an excellent moist curl". The descriptions emphasize the quality and curl of his natural brown hair. Significantly, Hooke's diary reveals that in August 1672, he purchased a wig and cut his hair short, subsequently wearing wigs regularly in the early and mid-1670s. 

A seal discovered on an Isle of Wight document from 1684/85 bears an image that matches many details from the written descriptions, including the curled hair and facial features, though its authenticity as Hooke's likeness remains debated. Newton's infamous comment that he had seen "further by standing on the shoulders of Giants" is believed by some historians to be a particularly cruel jab at Hooke's pronounced spinal curvature. (3)

FASHION  Hooke dressed plainly and practically, favoring utility over elegance. He had little interest in fashion beyond comfort and function.

As previously noted, Hooke adopted the fashion of wearing wigs in the 1670s, purchasing his first wig in August 1672. This timing corresponds with when wig-wearing became fashionable among professional and middle-class men in Restoration England. The fact that Hooke could afford such accessories (wigs were expensive status symbols) reflects his improving financial circumstances through his surveying work.
Given his position at Gresham College, where professors were required to maintain certain standards of decorum, and his interactions with Royal Society members (including aristocrats and wealthy merchants), Hooke would have needed to dress appropriately for his professional station. His increasing wealth from surveying work—earning approximately £500 annually by the 1670s—would have allowed him to maintain the appearance befitting a respected man of science and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
CHARACTER Brilliant but combative, Hooke was intensely curious, deeply insecure, and fiercely protective of his ideas. He was prone to paranoia and resentment, especially when he felt his work was being appropriated by others.

Hooke frequently engaged in priority disputes over scientific discoveries. His conflicts with Newton over optics, gravitation, and microscope design suggest deep-seated insecurity about receiving proper credit for his work. Some historians attribute this to the precarious nature of his professional position and his need to defend his intellectual contributions.

Hooke possessed an extraordinary work ethic and was described as "always overworked". He fulfilled his demanding responsibilities at the Royal Society with "ingenuity and gusto," performing hundreds of experiments over decades and setting a high intellectual standard. His diary reveals a man engaged in "frantic circulation" through London, maintaining an "energetic rush" of professional and social activities. (4) (5)

SPEAKING VOICE Hooke regularly presented demonstrations and lectures to the Royal Society's members, delivered Cutlerian Lectures on practical sciences, and served as Professor of Geometry at Gresham College. These positions required substantial public speaking abilities. His successful book Micrographia demonstrates his capacity for clear communication and accessible prose commentary.

SENSE OF HUMOUR Limited direct evidence exists regarding Hooke's sense of humor. However, his reputation suffered from public satire. In 1676, Thomas Shadwell's successful play The Virtuoso satirized the Royal Society, and Hooke felt personally targeted by the mockery. The play's character "Sir Nicholas Gimcrack" was widely interpreted as lampooning Hooke and the Royal Society's experimental work, particularly their "weighing of air" experiments.
RELATIONSHIPS Robert Hooke never married, as Fellows of Gresham College were required to remain celibate. His personal relationships, particularly with women, remain among the most controversial aspects of his life.

Grace Hooke (Niece): The most significant and troubling relationship in Hooke's life was with his niece, Grace Hooke, daughter of his brother John. Grace came to live with her uncle Robert in London around 1670-1672, when she was approximately 10-12 years old. Ostensibly, the arrangement was for Robert to supervise her education. However, Hooke's diary reveals that by 1675-1676, when Grace was approximately 16 years old, he began a sexual relationship with her. His diary contains numerous coded entries (using the Pisces astrological symbol) documenting their intimate encounters.
Diary entries such as "slept with Grace" appear regularly from June 1676 onward. In December 1676, Hooke wrote "Grace out. I resolvd to rid my self of her," suggesting internal conflict about the relationship. Biographer Stephen Inwood considers Grace to have been "the love of his life," and Hooke was reportedly devastated when she died in 1687 at age 27. Her death marked a turning point; Hooke's health declined significantly thereafter. This relationship constituted incest under contemporary law and would have been considered a felony even in the 17th century. ​

Female Servants: Hooke had sexual relationships with several female servants and housekeepers, including Nell Young, Mary Robinson, and others. His diary meticulously recorded these encounters using the Pisces symbol. Nell Young was the servant with whom he maintained the longest relationship and friendship; they remained friends even after she married and left his household.

Professional Relationships: Hooke maintained important professional friendships, particularly with Christopher Wren, with whom he collaborated for decades on architectural projects. He was close to Robert Boyle and worked with him for seven years. He became friends with the traveler Robert Knox, who brought him gifts and curiosities from his voyages, including cannabis seeds.

The Newton Rivalry: Hooke's most famous relationship was his bitter rivalry with Isaac Newton. The conflict began in 1672 when Newton submitted his first paper to the Royal Society on the nature of light. Hooke's scathing criticism humiliated Newton. Tensions exploded when Newton published Principia in 1687, containing his Law of Universal Gravitation. Hooke claimed Newton had borrowed his ideas about inverse-square gravitational attraction without acknowledgment. Newton refused to give Hooke credit, and their correspondence became "increasingly acrimonious". After Hooke's death in 1703, Newton became President of the Royal Society and allegedly oversaw the destruction or disappearance of Hooke's portrait. The rivalry embodied two contrasting approaches to science: Hooke's collaborative, experimental method versus Newton's solitary, mathematical approach.


MONEY AND FAME Robert Hooke's financial situation improved dramatically over his lifetime. He began with modest means—inheriting £40 (some sources say £100) from his father in 1648. His early positions paid relatively little: the Royal Society provided an annual salary of £30 (often paid late), the Cutlerian Lectureship offered £50 annually (which he had difficulty collecting), and his Gresham College professorship paid £50.

However, Hooke's work as City Surveyor after the Great Fire of London transformed his finances. He received fees from citizens for certificates and reports, payment for rebuilding London churches, and income from privately commissioned architectural work. His annual income during peak years reached approximately £500, placing him among the wealthier middle classes.
By his death in 1703, Hooke had accumulated remarkable wealth. An iron chest found in his room at Gresham College contained approximately £10,000 in cash (equivalent to close to £1 million in today's money). Some contemporary accounts estimated his total wealth at £12,000. This was an incredibly large sum for an employee of the Royal Society receiving infrequent and late partial payments of his annual £30 salary". Nearly all his fortune came from his surveying work rather than his scientific positions.

During his lifetime, Hooke achieved significant recognition. His 1665 book Micrographia became one of the first scientific bestsellers. Hooke was "a celebrity" in his era and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.

However, his reputation suffered considerably, particularly due to his conflicts with Newton and others. In later centuries, Hooke's legacy was "often vilified by writers" and he was largely forgotten, overshadowed by contemporaries like Newton and Wren. His reputation has only been restored in recent decades, with scholars now recognizing him as one of the greatest experimentalists of the 17th century and calling him "England's Leonardo [da Vinci]". FOOD AND DRINK He ate simply and sparingly, often neglecting meals when absorbed in work. This moderation was part of his overall approach to managing his chronic health problems.

Hooke frequently discussed the effects of "Dulwich water," a mineral drink from Dulwich Wells in South London, noting it "heat me much but betterd my stomack next day," "wrought well," and "mightily refresht me". He regularly consumed coffee and tea, and used the language of "refreshment" to describe their effects. He drank various alcohols, noting that "clough brandy refresht the stomack yet it stopd the natural passage but pears opened it". (5)

Hooke frequently took various medicinal compounds and proprietary concoctions. He regularly used "Andrews cordiall," which he described as causing effects like "wrought quick, went shivering and hazy like an ague to bed, burned about 2 and sweat much after" and on another occasion "brought much slime out of the gutts and made me cheerfull". He experimented with "Dr Cox's medicine," "tincture of steel," flowers of sulphur, mercury, senna, and sal ammoniac.

Perhaps most remarkably, Hooke experimented with consuming vomit—both his own and that of others—as an emetic and purgative. He recorded purchasing "Dr. Thompsons vomit" and the vomit of "Mr Hewk," documenting their various physical and psychological effects. One entry notes: "took Dr. Thompsons vomit. It vomited twice. Purged 10 or 12 times… Made me sleep ill, and made my arms paralytick with a great noyse in my head". (5)
Hooke was a habitué of London's coffeehouses, particularly Garraway's (which he visited 1,274 times according to diary records) and Jonathan's (545 visits). Between 1672-1683, he made a total of 2,637 individual visits to coffeehouses. These establishments structured his social and professional networks, serving as places to meet scientists, craftsmen, clients, and travelers.

MUSIC AND ARTS  Robert Hooke demonstrated significant artistic ability from childhood. After his father's death in 1648, the young Hooke briefly apprenticed to the celebrated portrait painter Sir Peter Lely in London, though the arrangement ended when paint fumes aggravated his headaches.

Hooke's artistic skills proved invaluable to his scientific work. The detailed engravings in Micrographia (1665) showcase his exceptional ability to render microscopic observations visually. His illustrations of insects, plant structures, and other specimens combined scientific accuracy with artistic composition. His drawing of a flea became one of the most famous images in early microscopy.

Hooke conducted extensive research in acoustics and music theory. His work on sound included experiments on how sound traveled through different media. He investigated the physics of musical instruments and vibration. His understanding of sound and music theory was sufficiently sophisticated to constitute a "larger subject than might seem the case from studies of his career so far available". (7)

Hooke designed numerous buildings after the Great Fire of London, including Bethlem Hospital, Montague House, and the Royal College of Physicians. His collaboration with Christopher Wren on London's reconstruction and church designs blended scientific principles with aesthetic considerations. Contemporary accounts suggest Hooke played a major role in designing the Monument to the Great Fire and contributed significantly to St. Paul's Cathedral's dome design.

LITERATURE Hooke was an avid reader. A picturesque account in Micrographia begins: "Reading one day in Septemb.", suggesting he regularly engaged with books during his leisure time. His diary and correspondence reveal familiarity with contemporary scientific literature and travelers' accounts.

Hooke's most significant literary achievement was Micrographia (1665), one of the first scientific bestsellers and a masterpiece of 17th-century science literature. Samuel Pepys famously called it "the most ingenious booke that I ever read in my life". The work combined detailed scientific observations with accessible prose commentary and stunning illustrations.

NATURE Robert Hooke possessed an intense fascination with the natural world, manifested across multiple disciplines:

Hooke's observations of nature at microscopic scale revolutionized biology. Using his improved compound microscope, he examined an extraordinarily diverse range of natural specimens: cork (where he discovered "cells"), insect eyes, plant seeds, snowflakes, feathers, flies, moss, and "animalcules". His Micrographia illustrations showed silk fibers, fine lawn cloth, ants, fleas, cellar spiders, moths, nettle and wild oat, seaweed, rosemary and sage.

Hooke described these observations as revealing "the Wisdom and Providence of the All-wise Creator" in nature's smallest creatures. His work emphasized that divine design was "not less shewn in these small despicable creatures, Flies and Moths...then in those" larger animals. (8)
Hooke made pioneering contributions to paleontology and geology. He was among the first to correctly identify fossils as "petrified remains of once living creatures" rather than mysterious mineral formations. He called fossils "medals of Nature" and part of "Nature's Grammar," suggesting they should be collected and studied like texts. (9)

Hooke's geological observations led him to three remarkable conclusions: fossils were organic remains, there had been radical changes in sea level throughout Earth's history, and hilltops in England had once formed beds of tropical oceans (evidenced by giant sea shells). He rightly inferred that fossilized fish in mountainous areas meant they had once been underwater, leading him to conclude that Earth had been inhabited by many extinct species. His work laid the foundation for modern geology, and evidence suggests James Hutton incorporated much of Hooke's theory into his own geological framework.

In 1664, Hooke conducted a famous and disturbing vivisection experiment on a dog to investigate breathing mechanisms. He strapped a stray dog to his table, cut off the animal's chest to observe the thoracic cavity, and kept the terrified creature alive by pumping air into its lungs with a bellows for over an hour. In his letter to Robert Boyle describing the experiment, Hooke revealed genuine remorse: "I shall hardly be induced to make any further trials of this kind, because of the torture of this creature". This demonstrates that unlike some contemporaries who took pleasure in vivisection, Hooke was "deeply moved by the suffering he had caused". (10)

HOBBIES AND SPORTS Hooke's primary leisure activities centered on coffeehouses, which functioned as his social and professional gathering spaces. His diary documents thousands of visits to these establishments, particularly Garraway's and Jonathan's in Exchange Alley. These were not merely places to drink coffee but served as venues for meeting friends, discussing science, conducting business, hearing gossip, and encountering travelers with news from abroad.

Hooke's diary mentions walking as a regular activity. In June 1677, he recorded: "Walkd to Islington with Grace till she was weary". He took walks in "the fields north of Murfields or along the Thames" with Grace. These walks served both as exercise and leisure time.

From childhood, Hooke delighted in working with mechanical instruments and devices. He continued this interest throughout his life, constantly inventing and improving scientific instruments. This hands-on mechanical work appears to have been both professional necessity and genuine pleasure.

There is no evidence that Hooke participated in sports or athletic activities. His chronic ill health, spinal deformity, and physical frailty likely precluded active sports participation.

SCIENCE AND MATHS Robert Hooke was the sort of person who, if left alone in a room with a spring, a bit of cork, and a vague question about the universe, would emerge a few hours later having reinvented three branches of science and built a new instrument to measure the fourth. In the unruly, competitive, and frequently bad-tempered world of 17th-century science, Hooke stands out as one of its most relentlessly inventive minds—a man who seemed constitutionally incapable of not figuring things out.

His most famous contribution, Hooke’s Law, arrived in 1678 and did something rare in science: it explained a complicated behavior in terms so simple that even the universe appeared to nod in agreement. Hooke showed that the amount a spring stretches is proportional to the force applied to it—no drama, no theatrics, just a tidy relationship between push and pull. This modest insight turned springs from temperamental curiosities into reliable components, quietly enabling everything from clocks and car suspensions to the humble click of a retractable pen. It was physics behaving itself for once.

But Hooke was never content to linger in one field. He had an irrepressible urge to peer closer, which led him to microscopy and, eventually, to immortality of a different sort. While examining cork in 1665, Hooke noticed it was riddled with tiny compartments, which reminded him of monks’ cells. He called them “cells,” and biology has been stuck with the word ever since. His book Micrographia—lavishly illustrated and astonishingly popular—revealed a hidden world of insect eyes, plant fibers, and crystalline snowflakes, convincing an astonished public that reality was far more crowded than previously suspected.

In astronomy, he identified the rotation of Mars and Jupiter, described lunar craters in detail, and very likely glimpsed what we now call Jupiter’s Great Red Spot before anyone thought to name it. He built the first accurate astronomical clock, proposed using pendulums to measure gravity, and designed telescopes so refined they made the heavens seem newly furnished. In 1674, he even constructed a functioning Gregorian reflecting telescope—a device that sounds obscure but was, in its way, revolutionary.

Then there was gravity, the subject that would haunt Hooke’s legacy. Years before Isaac Newton did the sums, Hooke suggested that planets were attracted to the Sun and that this attraction weakened with distance—possibly according to an inverse-square law. Newton later provided the mathematics and the fame, while Hooke got a lifelong grievance and one of history’s most legendary scientific feuds. Their relationship deteriorated into a frosty silence so thorough that Hooke’s portrait may have vanished from the Royal Society out of sheer spite.

Hooke didn’t fare much better in optics, where he argued—correctly, as it turns out—that light behaved like a wave. Newton disagreed, loudly and at length. Modern physics has since resolved the matter by deciding that light is both a wave and a particle, which would have pleased neither man but vindicated both. Along the way, Hooke invented the iris diaphragm, refined telescopes and microscopes, and built a refractometer for measuring how light bends through liquids.

If an instrument could be improved, Hooke improved it. If one didn’t exist, he built it. His inventions ranged from the universal joint (still known as Hooke’s joint) to balance springs for watches, air pumps, surveying micrometers, depth-sounders, weather instruments, and machines for grinding lenses. Working with Robert Boyle, he engineered the vacuum pumps that made Boyle’s gas law possible, quietly performing the technical miracles while Boyle took the headlines.

Hooke also had ideas about heat, matter, and air that were centuries ahead of their time. He proposed that heat was a form of energy rather than a material substance and suggested that air pressure came from tiny particles in constant motion—ideas that modern physics would later adopt with enthusiasm.

Though not a pure mathematician, Hooke was mathematically formidable enough to become Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, where he lectured, experimented, and occasionally taught algebra to family members, presumably because he couldn’t help himself. More than anything, he believed in experimentation—actual, messy, hands-on testing—as the surest path to truth. This insistence helped establish experimental science as the standard rather than a novelty.

In the end, Robert Hooke’s greatest talent may have been his refusal to specialize. He ranged freely across disciplines, connecting ideas others kept neatly separated. It made him indispensable, exasperating, and often overlooked—but it also made him one of the most astonishingly productive minds of his age. If science were a city, Hooke didn’t just live there; he helped build the streets, the tools, and quite a few of the laws governing traffic.


PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Hooke came from a highly religious Anglican family. His father, John Hooke, was an Anglican clergyman who intended Robert for the ministry. However, when persistent headaches interrupted his theological studies, this plan was abandoned. The Anglican Church was abolished between 1643 and 1660, which coincided with Hooke's time at Westminster School and Oxford, influencing his decision to pursue science rather than the clergy.

Hooke believed that scientific instruments served to restore human senses to the perfection Adam enjoyed before the Fall. This theological framework provided both motivation for scientific inquiry and moral legitimacy for his experimental work.

While Hooke's personal religious beliefs are difficult to determine with certainty, he "valued tolerance" and "valued Liberty of conscience". He maintained close relationships with very religious people, including Robert Boyle, John Wilkins (Bishop of Chester), and John Tillotson (Archbishop of Canterbury). Hooke's mentor John Wilkins was "pretty explicit about his Christian beliefs and the way in which the natural philosophy that he's putting forward including a mechanical philosophy is totally congruent with Christian metaphysics and faith". However, scholars note "we cannot know" the full extent of Hooke's personal faith. Some suggest we "cannot say that he was an atheist under cover or at least we cannot know it's something we just cannot know". The evidence suggests Hooke was a practicing Christian who saw no conflict between his scientific work and religious belief, though the depth of his personal piety remains uncertain. (11)
POLITICS Robert Hooke was born during a period of intense political upheaval in 17th-century England. King Charles I was beheaded in 1649 when Hooke was 14 years old, following a civil war between royalists and radical Protestants. Oliver Cromwell established himself as "Lord Protector" (dictator) in 1653, the year Hooke entered Oxford. The Restoration of the monarchy under Charles II in 1660 coincided with Hooke's early professional career and the founding of the Royal Society.
Hooke appears to have deliberately avoided direct political involvement. His educational path was influenced by political instability—many leading scientists switched from London to Oxford during the 1640s-50s seeking more politically stable environments, which influenced Hooke's decision to study at Oxford.
Hooke benefited from royal and aristocratic patronage. He dedicated Micrographia to the King and had direct access to Charles II, whom he consulted about his brother's estate in 1678. He submitted a watch with balance-spring mechanism to Charles II in 1675 to establish priority over Huygens. These relationships were professional rather than overtly political.

SCANDAL Robert Hooke's life involved several scandalous elements:

The most serious scandal in Hooke's personal life was his sexual relationship with his niece Grace Hooke. Beginning around 1675-1676 when Grace was approximately 16 years old (she had been in his care since age 10-12), this relationship constituted incest under contemporary law and would have been considered a felony even in 17th-century England. The relationship was apparently kept secret, revealed only through Hooke's coded diary entries. Modern scholars recognize this as grooming behavior. This scandal remained largely hidden for centuries until researchers decoded Hooke's diary.
Hooke engaged in numerous acrimonious disputes over credit and priority for scientific discoveries. Hooke's most famous conflict began when he harshly criticized Newton's 1672 paper on light, leading to increasingly acrimonious correspondence. The dispute exploded in 1686-1687 when Hooke accused Newton of plagiarizing his ideas about inverse-square gravitational attraction for the Principia. Newton denied Hooke's claims and removed numerous references to Hooke from his manuscript. Newton's famous quote about "standing on the shoulders of Giants" is believed to be a cruel jab at Hooke's spinal deformity.

A bitter dispute erupted between Hooke and Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens over who invented the balance-spring watch. Both presented watches with springs in 1675, though their designs differed significantly. Hooke claimed he had conceived the idea before 1660, but this was "unsupported by any evidence," and he "had a reputation for frequently attempting to claim the inventions of others". While Hooke may have invented a straight spring regulator, Huygens created the first working spiral spring watch. (12)


MILITARY RECORD Robert Hooke never served in the military in any capacity. His lifetime spanned several conflicts including the English Civil War (1642-1651), the Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1674), and various other military engagements, but Hooke's chronic ill health and physical frailty would have precluded military service. His spinal deformity, which developed around age 16 and caused severe pain and restricted mobility, would have disqualified him from military duty even if he had been inclined toward such service.
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS Hooke was an extremely frail and sickly child. His parents held little hope" for his survival during his first years. He suffered from frequent and severe headaches throughout childhood, which prevented regular school attendance and interrupted his early education. His father eventually gave up plans for Robert to study for the ministry due to these persistent headaches.

At approximately age 16, Hooke "first grew awry" and developed a severe curvature of the spine. This was likely caused by Scheuermann's kyphosis, a condition in which vertebrae grow unevenly. The deformity caused him to become "very crooked", restricted his mobility, and caused "severe and disabling pain" throughout his life. His contemporaries described him as "despicable" in appearance due to this pronounced curvature.

Hooke experienced numerous ongoing health problems. His diary is filled with detailed records of his symptoms and the various remedies he tried. He suffered from frequent headaches, digestive problems, and various pains. 

In the late 1690s, Hooke's health began to deteriate. He suffered from symptoms consistent with cardiovascular disease and diabetes: swollen legs, chest pains, dizziness, and emaciation. He also suffered from scurvy. During his last year of life, "blindness and swelling of the legs rendered him helpless" and he became bedridden. The death of his niece Grace in 1687 marked a turning point after which "his health declined at a greater rate".

Hooke engaged in extensive self-medication throughout his life. His diary documents consumption of numerous remedies, purgatives, emetics, and medicinal compounds. He experimented with various substances to manage his symptoms, including proprietary medicines, mineral waters, herbal preparations, mercury, sulphur, and even cannabis. He meticulously recorded the effects of these substances on his body and mind.

Despite his limitations, he maintained an extraordinarily active intellectual and professional life, rushing between coffeehouses, laboratories, building sites, and meetings.

HOMES Freshwater, Isle of Wight (1635-1648): Robert Hooke was born and spent his first 13 years at the household connected to All Saints' Church in Freshwater, where his father served as curate. The family home was modest, befitting a clergyman's family. Young Robert was largely confined to home due to his frequent illnesses.

Oxford - Christ Church College (1653-1662): From age 18, Hooke resided at Christ Church College, Oxford. His accommodation was provided as part of his position as organist, chorister, and servitor. During this period, he also worked in Robert Boyle's laboratory.

Gresham College, London (1665-1703): In 1665, when Hooke was appointed Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, he received lodgings at the college that "remained his home from then on". Gresham College was located on Bishopsgate Street in the City of London. Hooke lived in apartments within the college for 38 years until his death.

During the Great Plague of London in 1665, Hooke left the city temporarily. He retired to Durdans, near Epsom, to continue experiments away from the plague.

Property Investments: While Hooke lived at Gresham College, he invested in property. Documents exist showing him involved in property transactions on the Isle of Wight, including a 1684/85 assignment of a mortgage between the Town of Newport and Robert Hooke. His brother John had taken out mortgages on Newport properties, which Robert eventually repaid.
TRAVEL Unlike gentlemen of his era who typically undertook Grand Tours of Europe, Hooke seldom left London. Hooke maintained connections to his birthplace and did occasionally returneto the Isle of Wight to visit family. 

While Hooke himself rarely traveled, he maintained keen interest in travel narratives and accounts from distant lands. He published travel literature by others, including Robert Knox's An historical relation of the island Ceylon (1681). Knox, who became Hooke's close friend, presented him with "gifts and curiosities" from his voyages, including the seeds of cannabis from his travels to the East. Hooke regularly met travelers at coffeehouses, where he heard their accounts. (15)

DEATH Robert Hooke died on March 3, 1703, at his lodgings in Gresham College, London. He was 67 years old. 

In his final years, Hooke suffered from multiple conditions including symptoms consistent with cardiovascular disease and diabetes: swollen legs, chest pains, dizziness, emaciation, and blindness. He also suffered from scurvy. These conditions progressively incapacitated him until he was confined to bed for his final year.

Despite his regularly voiced intentions to leave a generous bequest to the Royal Society to provide it with permanent premises, Hooke died intestate (without a will). His money subsequently passed to his illiterate cousin Elizabeth Stephens.

Hooke was buried at St. Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, near Gresham College where he had lived. The burial took place shortly after his death.

Tragically, Hooke's final resting place was disturbed and his remains lost. In 1891, during restoration work on the nave floor at St. Helen's Church, workmen uncovered "a jumble of crushed coffins, corpses and old bones". As many as 1,000 bodies had lain under the nave. Only 10 were identified; Hooke was not among them. All unclaimed bones were packed into crates and reburied in a common grave at City of London Cemetery, Wanstead, approximately 10 kilometers away. Hooke's bones are somewhere in that mass grave, unidentified and unmarked. (16)
Newton's treatment of Hooke after his death bordered on vindictive. When Newton became President of the Royal Society in 1703 (the same year Hooke died), he allegedly oversaw the destruction or disappearance of Hooke's portrait. Newton also removed references to Hooke from later editions of Principia. This posthumous erasure contributed to centuries of historical neglect. His reputation was only restored in the late 20th century, when scholars began recognizing him as one of the greatest experimental scientists of the 17th century and England's Leonardo da Vinci".

NAME Thomas Hardy​

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Thomas Hardy is renowned as one of England’s greatest novelists and poets of the Victorian and early modern era. He is most famous for his novels set in the fictional region of Wessex, such as Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Jude the Obscure

BIRTH Born on June 2, 1840, at Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, England, in a rural cottage built by his great-grandfather.​ He was so frail at birth that he was left for dead, until an observant midwife noticed faint signs of life and revived him with a sharp slap.

FAMILY BACKGROUND Hardy's father, also Thomas Hardy, was a stonemason and builder, noted for his musical talents with the fiddle. His mother, Jemima, was highly literate and ambitious, influencing her son's education and character.​ he marriage between Thomas’s parents was a shotgun wedding — they married just six months before he was born. The family’s means were modest, and their social standing humble, which would later shape Hardy’s lifelong awareness of class and social constraint.

The Hardys were an old Dorset family, though their economic status had declined. His paternal grandfather and father were keen violin players, instilling in him a lifelong love of music.

CHILDHOOD  He grew up in a close-knit rural community, deeply influenced by the landscape and nature of Dorset. Hardy was a delicate and sickly child, causing constant anxiety for his family. He remained at home until the age of eight. 

Encouraged by his mother, he developed an early passion for reading, devouring Dryden and Samuel Johnson before he turned ten. His rural surroundings — the heaths, woods, and lanes of Dorset — left a lasting mark on his imagination and later became the landscapes of his fiction.

EDUCATION  His mother taught him to read and write before he was four. At eight, Hardy attended Julia Martin’s school in Higher Bockhampton, then transferred a year later to Mr. Last’s Academy for Young Gentlemen in Dorchester, a daily walk of several miles. There he excelled in Latin and mathematics. His family, however, lacked the means to send him to university, so at sixteen he became apprenticed to James Hicks, a local church architect. 

Hardy was a determined autodidact (self-taught person), immersing himself in Greek and Roman classics, the Bible, and contemporary scientific works like those of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer. He also took evening classes at King's College London (1865–1866) while working as an architect.

Hardy was known for his discipline — he would rise at 4 a.m. in summer and 5 a.m. in winter to read poetry before work began.

CAREER RECORD 1856–1862: Apprenticed to Dorchester architect John Hicks.

1862–1867: Worked in London for architect Arthur Blomfield, during which time he also began writing poetry.

1867–1874: Returned to Dorset, continuing architectural work while devoting himself to writing, including a failed first novel, The Poor Man and the Lady.

1871: Published his first novel, Desperate Remedies (anonymously).

1874: Publication of Far from the Madding Crowd brought him sufficient financial success to abandon architecture for a full-time writing career.

1874–1897: Prolific novelist, publishing major works like The Return of the Native (1878), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895).

1898–1928: After the hostile reception of Jude the Obscure, he gave up writing fiction entirely to focus on poetry, his original love. He published eight volumes of poetry, including the epic poetic drama The Dynasts (1904–1908).

APPEARANCE Physically, Hardy was small and slight, standing 5 feet 6 inches tall. His adult appearance was distinguished by his impressive, high forehead, closely-set, deep-set eyes, and a neat beard (though he was clean-shaven in later life). His expression was often described as intense, contemplative, and slightly sad or grave.

FASHION Hardy dressed neatly but without ostentation, favoring the sober, practical attire of a middle-class professional rather than the flamboyant style of a literary celebrity. Fashion in Hardy’s novels and life often indicated social class, profession, or mood but was never ostentatious.​

When Thomas Hardy penned Tess of the D’urbevilles. he wrote wrapped up against the cold in an old knitted shawl, wearing socks but no shoes and ancient trousers he mended himself with string. (1)

CHARACTER Hardy was a deeply introspective, introverted, and sensitive man. He was often described as retiring, reserved, and melancholic, with a serious and exacting mind. Though he could be genial and witty in smaller company, his reserve and awareness of his humble origins led some Dorchester locals to find him aloof and even accuse him of meanness.

Despite his literary and philosophical pessimism—a rational outlook shaped by his observation of life's tragedies and his private study—he was characterized by a profound empathy and compassion for the suffering of humanity and animals, and a strong sense of moral integrity. He was fiercely independent in thought, self-disciplined, and intensely protective of his work. He was also somewhat hypochondriacal.

SPEAKING VOICE Hardy’s voice was soft and deliberate, with the Dorset lilt of his upbringing still faintly audible even after decades of London life.  He was often quietly spoken and reserved in company, but those he spoke with found him charming.​

SENSE OF HUMOUR Though gloomy by reputation, Hardy possessed a dry, mischievous wit. His humor often took the form of fooling or needling people, particularly well-educated strangers who underestimated the country mason’s son. eg t: Epitaph Of a Pessimist

His "humorous" rustic characters in his novels, with their earthy, common-sense banter offered a contrast to the tragic fates of the protagonists. 

RELATIONSHIPS In 1870, while restoring St. Juliot Church in Cornwall, Hardy met Emma Gifford, the rector’s sister. Their romance inspired his novel A Pair of Blue Eyes. They married on September 17, 1874, in Paddington, London, with the ceremony conducted by Emma’s uncle, Canon Edwin Gifford. Their honeymoon took them to Dartington Hall, Brighton, Dieppe, Rouen, and Paris.

In 1885, the couple moved into Max Gate, a house Hardy designed himself near Dorchester. But the marriage soured — Emma was socially superior, and the couple’s childlessness and temperamental differences caused estrangement. By 1899 Emma had retreated to attic rooms she called her “sweet refuge and solace.”

Her sudden death in 1912 devastated Hardy, who returned to Cornwall to revisit the places of their courtship and poured his grief into the “Poems of 1912–13.” Two years later, he married Florence Dugdale, his much younger secretary and companion on February 10, 1914 at St. Andrew's Church in Enfield. Hardy was 74; Florence was 35. The marriage was reportedly calmer, but she struggled with his continued intense devotion and poetic commemoration of his first wife.

He was attracted to younger women and sometimes engaged in extramarital affairs, which caused tension.​

MONEY AND FAME Hardy achieved both financial security and literary renown in his lifetime. Despite his success, he was uncomfortable with fame and careful with money — a trait mistaken for stinginess. 

He was an international literary celebrity in his later years, regularly visited by younger writers like Virginia Woolf and Siegfried Sassoon.

Hardy was made a Companion of Honour in 1910 and Order of Merit in 1912, cementing his status as one of England’s greatest men of letters.

Hardy enjoyed commercial and critical success but faced criticism and censorship for his frank portrayal of sexuality and pessimism. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest English writers by the end of his life.​

FOOD AND DRINK Thomas Hardy’s tastes were modest and rooted in his Dorset upbringing. He preferred hearty, simple "countrified cuisine," with favorites like kettle-broth and grilled bacon. He had little interest in the elaborate dining habits of London’s literati. 

Cider was the family’s traditional drink — his father made it himself — and Hardy remained fond of it all his life.

MUSIC AND ARTS Music was in Hardy’s blood. His father was a fiddler at local festivals, and from childhood, Thomas absorbed the rhythms and melodies of rural Dorset. These early sounds infused his writing with a musical cadence, evident in both his prose and poetry. 

His musical tastes extended beyond local folk music to the great composers: Gustav Holst and Richard Wagner were among his favourites. The BBC Radio 4 program Thomas Hardy’s iPod recounts a story of Hardy discussing Wagner’s music with composer Edvard Grieg. Hardy praised Wagner’s ability to “conjure wind and rain” through sound, to which Grieg replied dismissively, “I would rather have the wind and rain myself.” (2)

Hardy had a keen visual sense, having trained as a draughtsman and architect, and maintained an artistic sensibility throughout his life, painting and appreciating visual arts.​

WRITING CAREER While working as an architect in London, Thomas Hardy grew increasingly cross with the publishing world for its apparent indifference to his poetry. Editors, it seemed, were delighted to accept his drawings of churches but wanted nothing to do with his sonnets. His first published work was not verse at all but a cheerful little prose piece called "How I Built Myself a House," which appeared in Chambers’ Journal in 1865. A few years later, after falling ill and losing patience with the city’s sooty bustle, Hardy retreated to Dorset, where he resumed architectural work and promptly decided he’d had enough of blueprints forever. Writing, he concluded, was the safer form of construction.

His first attempt, The Poor Man and the Lady (1867), was deemed too politically incendiary for Victorian tastes — a rejection that might have crushed a lesser man but merely redirected Hardy’s efforts toward stories more likely to sell. The results were Desperate Remedies (1871) and Under the Greenwood Tree (1872), both published anonymously in case things went wrong again. They didn’t, and with A Pair of Blue Eyes (1873) — the first to bear his name — Hardy not only found success but also gave the English language the term “cliffhanger,” courtesy of a scene in which the hero literally dangles from a cliff.

The turning point came with Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), whose title Hardy borrowed from Gray’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. The novel’s serialization won such praise that Hardy abandoned architecture and became a full-time writer. His novels, rooted in the moral and social soil of rural Dorset, struck nerves as often as they won hearts. Many locals saw too much of themselves in his pages and never quite forgave him for it.

Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891) was a particular scandal, with its tender portrayal of a “fallen woman” — a story inspired by Hardy’s grandmother, who had borne an illegitimate child and nearly met the hangman for stealing a copper kettle. The book’s critics howled; Hardy, unbothered, observed dryly that “Tess was a good milch-cow to me.” Four years later came Jude the Obscure (1895), which caused such moral uproar that one bishop famously threw his copy into the fire. Condemned as “dirt, drivel, and damnation,” it persuaded Hardy to quit novels altogether and return to his first love: poetry.

He spent his later years writing verse — more than 900 poems, by the end — and produced his magnum opus, The Dynasts (1903–1908), an immense poetic drama about the Napoleonic Wars that only Hardy himself ever seemed to fully understand. He was certain his poetry would outlive his prose. Time, however, has played its usual joke: his novels have never gone out of print.

By the time he died in 1928, Hardy had written fourteen novels, three volumes of short stories, and enough poems to fill several lifetimes. He left behind not just a body of literature but a whole fictional landscape — Wessex — inhabited by the flawed, striving, heartbreakingly human figures he had known all his life.

LITERATURE Thomas Hardy’s own reading tastes were wide-ranging and deeply intellectual. He was a determined autodidact who immersed himself in the Greek and Roman classics, especially tragic drama and poetry from writers like Sophocles and Shakespeare. He also read the Bible critically, as well as works by contemporary scientific thinkers, notably Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer, whose evolutionary ideas particularly influenced Hardy's outlook and literary themes. 

Hardy enjoyed the poetry and epic narratives of Wordsworth and Coleridge, returning to these for inspiration in structuring his novels as existential journeys.

NATURE Nature is central to Hardy's work. The Dorset landscape (Wessex) is almost a character itself, often mirroring or magnifying the emotional states of his human characters. While his nature writing is detailed and beautiful, it is also often unsentimental; nature is a vast, indifferent, deterministic force, not a benevolent presence.

Even in London, he remained nostalgic for the Dorset countryside, its hedgerows, larks, and timeless melancholy. His sympathy for rural people and their bond with nature runs through all his fiction and poetry, revealing a man who found both beauty and tragedy in the unyielding cycles of the natural world.

PETS Thomas Hardy had a deep affection for animals and was a lifelong advocate for their humane treatment. As a member of the Council for Justice to Animals, he campaigned against bloodsports, the chaining of dogs, and the caging of birds.

Hardy’s love for animals, however, often played out amid domestic chaos. His first wife, Emma, adored cats and once asked him to always refer to her favorite feline by its full, whimsical name: Kiddeley-wink-em-poops. Hardy, unsurprisingly, refused.

After Emma’s death, Hardy’s second wife, Florence, became deeply unsettled by what she felt was Emma’s lingering presence in their home. As part of an attempted “exorcism,” she killed all of Emma’s cats.

Hardy and Florence later kept a wire terrier named Wessex, described as a “peculiarly disagreeable dog” who bit even the most distinguished guests, and a blue Persian cat called Cobby, who mysteriously vanished after Hardy’s death. (2)

Hardy had a pet cemetery at Max Gate where he buried his beloved animals, including cats with names like Snowdove, Kitsey, Comfy, Pandora, and Marky. He also had his famous dog Wessex buried there. Hardy was known to carve many of the pet headstones himself.

HOBBIES AND SPORTS Hardy’s principal hobby was writing — an all-consuming pursuit he treated as both craft and calling. He also enjoyed walking through the Dorset countryside, often for hours at a time, observing the natural world that inspired much of his fiction and poetry. 

Hardy had little interest in sports, which he regarded as distractions from thought and literature and was appalled by activities such as hunting, which he saw as cruelty to animals.​

After moving to London in 1862, Hardy enrolled at King’s College London, winning prizes from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architectural Association. He served as assistant architect to Sir Arthur Blomfield in the Adelphi, where he was placed in charge of the excavation of St Pancras Old Church’s graveyard before the Midland Railway’s extension.

Although he spent six years under Blomfield’s direction, Hardy’s heart leaned toward poetry and the arts.

SCIENCE AND MATHS Hardy was not a scientist himself but lived during a period of intense scientific discovery. He was fascinated by the emerging ideas of Darwinian evolution and determinism, both of which influenced his sense of fate and inevitability in human life. His works often reflect a world ruled less by divine design and more by natural law and chance — ideas that resonated with the scientific debates of the late 19th century.

PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Hardy lost his Christian faith by the age of 27, largely due to reading Darwin.

He once described himself as trying to be a “village atheist”, though his worldview was more conflicted than that label suggests. Deeply sensitive to the cruelty and suffering he saw around him, he could not fully reject the idea of God — but the deity he imagined was either cruel or powerless.

Thomas Huxley, the scientist who coined the term “agnostic,” observed that “Hardy isn’t sure of what he does believe and not sure of what he doesn’t.” This uncertainty shaped his work, which often wrestles with divine injustice and human endurance.

Hardy’s wife Emma, a devout Christian, was increasingly appalled by the unchristian themes in his novels, which she saw as spiritually corrosive. Their differing views on faith contributed to the emotional distance between them in later years.

Hardy was known for his philosophical pessimism and fatalism. He was critical of religious institutions and drew on ancient tragedy, science, and ethical philosophy.​

POLITICS Politically, Hardy leaned toward social reform and human empathy, though he avoided formal party alignment. His novels reflect a deep awareness of class struggle and rural poverty, shaped by his own humble beginnings in Dorset. Hardy’s sympathy for the marginalized often clashed with Victorian moral codes, and he was criticized for challenging the conventions of gender, sexuality, and religion in his fiction.

SCANDAL His later novels, particularly Tess of the d'Urbervilles and especially Jude the Obscure, caused a public uproar. They were deemed "immoral," "morbid," and "obscene" by many critics for their frank treatment of sex, adultery, class barriers, and the questioning of religious institutions. Jude the Obscure — with its frank treatment of illegitimate children and sensual affairs — was derided by the press as Jude the Obscene and denounced by the Church as “dirt, drivel and damnation.” The Bishop of Wakefield even threw his copy into the fire. The uproar drove Hardy to abandon novel-writing for good. The controversy also marked the breaking point in his marriage to Emma, whose devout Christianity clashed bitterly with his attacks on moral hypocrisy.

Ever mindful of how he’d be remembered, Hardy set out to control his own legacy. He penned The Life of Thomas Hardy himself, carefully omitting what he didn’t want revealed and adding a few imaginative touches for good measure.  Florence typed and compiled his notes, and after his death, recopied his manuscript in a calligraphic hand that imitated his writing style—part of the ruse to make it appear her work. This “authorized biography” was published in her name, but scholars uncovered within a decade that Hardy had been its true author. Later editor Michael Millgate confirmed this through analysis of manuscripts and typescripts, revealing Hardy’s disguised handwriting and extensive authorial control.

MILITARY RECORD  Hardy witnessed the Boer War and World War I as an observer and commented reflectively on war in his poetry expressing a detached anti-war philosophy.​ His monumental poetic drama, The Dynasts (1903–1908), depicts the Napoleonic Wars as a vast, mechanical tragedy governed by forces beyond human control.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS Hardy was frequently ill during childhood but lived a long life, dying at 87. He suffered pleurisy towards the end of his life.​ His architectural apprenticeship and love of walking would have contributed to a degree of physical fitness.

HOMES Hardy was born in 1840 at Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester, in a cottage built by his great-grandfather. After moving to London to train as an architect, he later returned to Dorset, where he designed his own home, Max Gate, near Dorchester, in 1885.

It was intended to signify his entry into the established middle class but was known for its privacy and somewhat austere atmosphere. Emma lived much of her later life isolated in its upper rooms, and Florence endured the uneasy presence of her predecessor’s memory there.

TRAVEL Although Hardy spent several years in London early in his career, he was never much of a traveler. His heart and imagination remained rooted in the landscape of Wessex — the fictional region based on Dorset and its neighboring counties. Occasional trips abroad or to other parts of England did little to change his provincial affections. Most notably, he travelled to Cornwall in 1870, where he met his first wife, Emma Gifford, while working on a church restoration project

DEATH Thomas Hardy fell ill in December 1927 and died peacefully on January 11, 1928, after dictating his final poem to Florence on his deathbed. His last movement was a slight inclination of the head toward his wife, “as though he were endeavoring to nod to her.”

His funeral on January 16, 1928, at Westminster Abbey, became the subject of controversy. Hardy’s family wanted him buried at Stinsford, beside Emma, but his executor, Sir Sydney Cockerell, insisted on interment in Poets’ Corner. A compromise was reached: his heart was buried at Stinsford in Emma’s grave, and his ashes were placed in the Abbey.
