Edward Jenner

NAME Edward Jenner. He was widely known in his later life and posthumously as "The Father of Immunology," a title reflecting his status as the pioneer of the world's first vaccine. 

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Edward Jenner was an English physician and scientist who discovered the smallpox vaccine, the world’s first successful vaccine. Smallpox was a scourge of the eighteenth century, killing in Europe alone sixty million and all but five percent of those who survived suffered facial pockmark scarring. By proving that infection with the mild cowpox virus conferred lifetime immunity against the deadly smallpox virus, Jenner laid the foundations for modern immunology, ultimately leading to the global eradication of smallpox in 1980.

BIRTH Born May 17, 1749, in the village of Berkeley,  on the banks of the River Severn, in Gloucestershire, England, the eighth of nine children. (1)

FAMILY BACKGROUND His father, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, was the Vicar of Berkeley and Rector of Rockhampton — a clergyman of some means with landed property in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, and a former tutor to an Earl of Berkeley. 

His mother was the daughter of the Reverend Henry Head, a member of an old and respectable Berkshire family. 

When Edward was only five years old, his father died, and he was raised by an older brother, also in Holy Orders, who encouraged in the boy a natural love of country life and a taste for natural history. (2) 

CHILDHOOD As a young child Jenner was inoculated against smallpox by the commonly used practice of variolation — deliberate infection with live smallpox material — which had a lifelong effect on his general health. (3) 

Before he was nine, Edward Jenner is said to have made a collection of dormouse nests — an early sign of his keen naturalist instincts. He attended school at Wotton-under-Edge and later was placed in the care of the Reverend Dr. Washbourn at Cirencester, where he received a sound classical education. It was around this time that he became a lifelong friend of Caleb Hillier Parry, a fellow enthusiast for fossil collecting. (2)

EDUCATION At age 13 (some sources say 14), Jenner was apprenticed for seven years to Daniel Ludlow, a surgeon of Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire. (4)

In 1770, aged 21, he became a pupil of the eminent surgeon and scientist John Hunter at St George's Hospital in London — Hunter's inquiring mind and passion for experimentation proved a profound influence on the young medical student. Hunter reportedly passed on William Harvey's maxim: "Don't think; try." In 1792, after twenty years of general practice and surgery, Jenner obtained the degree of MD from the University of St Andrews. 

CAREER RECORD 1770: Jenner moved to London to train at St George's Hospital under the pioneering surgeon John Hunter, while also helping arrange natural history specimens brought back from Captain James Cook's first voyage. 

1773: He returned to his native Gloucestershire, establishing a highly successful practice as a countryside family doctor and surgeon in Berkeley. 

1788: Jenner was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society following his breakthrough zoological paper on the nesting habits of the cuckoo. 

1792: He obtained his formal medical degree (MD) from the University of St Andrews. 

1796: Jenner performed his historic first vaccination on young James Phipps, successfully establishing the science of vaccinology.

1821: He reached the pinnacle of his professional status when he was appointed Physician Extraordinary to King George IV.

APPEARANCE Jenner took evident pride in his appearance. He was described as a vigorous countryman with an active, outdoor constitution. (5)

Jenner was described by his close friend Edward Gardner as being rather under the middle size in height, with a robust, active, and well-formed frame. He had a pleasant, open countenance, with thoughtful blue eyes — a detail corroborated by the National Portrait Gallery's catalogue entry for his portrait by James Northcote, which records "grey-brown hair, blue eyes, rosy complexion" — and a neat, clean-shaven face. FASHION Jenner was described as "peculiarly neat" in his dress, always presenting himself as a serious man well-prepared for his professional duties. His friend and biographer John Baron, in an account quoted by Joseph Pettigrew, recorded that on first meeting Jenner in 1808 he was dressed in "a blue coat, nankeen breeches and white stockings" — the respectable, practical attire of a prosperous Georgian country doctor. 

Some accounts add well-polished top boots and a beaver hat as part of his visiting outfit, consistent with the fashion of a gentleman physician of the period, though these details are harder to pin to a single verified primary source. In certain formal portraits, Jenner is depicted with his clothing draped in a manner deliberately reminiscent of a classical Roman toga — a common artistic convention of the era used by portrait painters to confer an air of authority and timeless dignity upon their subjects, rather than a reflection of Jenner's actual dress. CHARACTER Jenner was described as conscientious, modest, curious, and observant, keeping meticulous notes and possessing a happy combination of common sense and scientific logic. He was adept at social gatherings, vigorous in country pursuits, and remained a beloved figure in his local community throughout his life. 

Jenner was notable for his generosity: he chose never to patent his vaccine, sharing his discovery freely to prioritise public health over personal profit. He built a cottage for James Phipps, the boy on whom he had first tested his vaccine, near his own home. (5) 

SPEAKING VOICE No detailed description of Jenner's speaking voice survives in the historical record. What is clear, however, is that he was a compelling and wide-ranging conversationalist. Contemporary accounts record that "educated people loved his conversation" and that his range of topics was vast — "sometimes serious, at others witty." He was so engaging in company that patients and friends would often ask permission to ride home with him after visits, even at midnight, accompanying him for miles on his rounds simply to enjoy his talk. That he had a good command of words is also evidenced by his poetry and his crisp, lucid scientific writing. (8)

SENSE OF HUMOUR Jenner had a genuine and well-documented wit. He was fond of the epigram — one surviving example, On the Death of a Miser, runs: "Tom at last has laid by his old niggardly forms.  And now gives good dinners; to whom, pray? The worms." 

His letters reveal a dry, self-aware humour: writing to a friend in 1805, by which point he was a household name, he described himself with mock grandeur as "Vaccine Clerk to the World." The tone of many of his personal letters is candid, occasionally grumpy, and deliberately comic — he was clearly a man who did not feel the need to perform dignity among friends. (8)

RELATIONSHIPS In March 1788, Jenner married Catherine Kingscote. According to one charming account, they may have first met when a trial hot-air balloon launched by Jenner and fellow scientists descended into Kingscote Park, Gloucestershire, the estate of Catherine's father, Anthony Kingscote. 

They had three children together: Edward Robert (1789–1810), Catherine Fitzhardinge (1794–1833), and Robert Fitzhardinge (1797–1854) — the last of whom was only 11 months old when his father inoculated him with the cowpox vaccine. 

Tragically, his wife suffered from chronic tuberculosis, and Jenner spent much of his time devotedly nursing her until her death in 1815, a loss that left him heartbroken. 

Professionally, he maintained an exceptionally close, lifelong mentor-student friendship with John Hunter.

MONEY AND FAME Jenner was granted £10,000 by Parliament in 1802 for his vaccination work, and a further £20,000 in 1807 — substantial sums for the era. 

He became internationally celebrated in his own lifetime; Napoleon made his troops submit to Jenner's vaccine and awarded him a medal, even though Britain and France were at war. 

Despite his fame and financial recognition, Jenner remained a modest country practitioner living at the Chantry in Berkeley. (5)

FOOD AND DRINK No detailed record of Jenner's specific dietary preferences or drinking habits survives in the historical record. What is documented is that he was a sociable and convivial man who greatly valued the pleasures of good company around a table. He was a founder member of the Gloucestershire Medical Society, which met regularly at the Fleece Inn, Rodborough, where members combined dining together with the reading and discussion of medical papers — an arrangement that clearly suited his gregarious nature and his habit of mixing scientific inquiry with friendship.

MUSIC AND ARTS Jenner enjoyed singing and played both the flute and the fiddle. He was a cultivated man of broad tastes and participated readily in the social and cultural life of Georgian Gloucestershire. (5)

LITERATURE Jenner wrote poetry about the countryside, reflecting his deep love of the natural world. (5) 

His scientific publications, notably An Inquiry Into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinæ (1798), are precise and lucid in their prose. He also contributed papers on angina pectoris, ophthalmia, and cardiac valvular disease to the Gloucestershire Medical Society. 

NATURE Jenner had a passionate and lifelong interest in natural history. As a child he collected dormouse nests; as an adult he made a careful scientific study of the cuckoo, correctly describing for the first time how the newly hatched cuckoo ejects host eggs and chicks from the nest using a hollow in its back — findings published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1788 and sufficient to convince Charles Darwin to revise a later edition of On the Origin of Species.

In 1771, he was employed by Sir Joseph Banks to arrange and prepare the zoological and botanical specimens brought back from Captain Cook's first voyage — work he performed with such skill that he was subsequently offered the prestigious post of naturalist on Cook's second expedition, which sailed in 1772. He declined, choosing instead to pursue medicine in Gloucestershire. Had he accepted, the history of vaccination might have been very different. (9)

In the last year of his life, he presented "Observations on the Migration of Birds" to the Royal Society. 

He was also a keen fossil collector, particularly of the oolitic formations near Cirencester. (4)

PETS Jenner kept cows — most famously the cow Blossom, whose hide now hangs on the wall of St George's Medical School library in London — and lived the life of a Gloucestershire country gentleman surrounded by animals and farmland. (1)

HOBBIES AND SPORTS Jenner was a keen horticulturist and fossil collector. 

He was an enthusiastic naturalist who combined his hobbies with scientific inquiry. 

Jenner also enjoyed social evenings at the Gloucestershire Medical Society, which met at the Fleece Inn, Rodborough, where members dined and read papers on medical subjects. 

SCIENCE AND MATHS Jenner's greatest scientific achievement was the development of the world's first vaccine. He demonstrated that cowpox inoculation conferred immunity against smallpox, a disease that in his era killed around 10% of the global population — and up to 20% in towns and cities.

His scientific method was rigorous: he observed, hypothesised, and systematically tested, ultimately reporting on 23 cases. 

Jenner also contributed to the understanding of angina pectoris; in correspondence with William Heberden he wrote: "How much the heart must suffer from the coronary arteries not being able to perform their functions."

His zoological work on the cuckoo demonstrated the same meticulous observational approach.

PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Jenner was a sincere Christian, neither fanatic nor lax, who expressed genuine spiritual feeling in his personal correspondence. 

He expressed his Christian faith quietly but sincerely; shortly before his death he told a friend: "I am not surprised that men are not grateful to me; but I wonder that they are not grateful to God for the good which He has made me the instrument of conveying to my fellow creatures." 

Jenner was also a Freemason, becoming a master mason on December 30, 1802, in the Lodge of Faith and Friendship #449, and serving as worshipful master of Royal Berkeley Lodge of Faith and Friendship from 1812 to 1813. He served as a Justice of the Peace, reflecting his sense of civic duty and moral responsibility.

Jenner lobbied Parliament successfully for financial recognition of his vaccination work and was supported by King George III in petitioning for the grants of 1802 and 1807. 

In 1821, he was appointed physician extraordinary to King George IV and made Mayor of Berkeley. 

He took no prominent role in party politics.

SCANDAL Critics — particularly the clergy — condemned vaccination as repulsive and ungodly, arguing it was abhorrent to inoculate a person with material from a diseased animal. Some also argued that vaccination took away the power of life and death from God. Jenner's ethical standing was never seriously questioned, though his decision to inoculate his own infant son attracted some criticism. The Church objected in no uncertain terms to the whole enterprise. (3)

MILITARY RECORD Jenner held no military rank or service. His most notable indirect connection to military matters was that Napoleon Bonaparte, despite being at war with Britain, ordered the mass vaccination of all French troops after accepting the value of Jenner's discovery, and at Jenner's personal request released English prisoners of war. 

MEDICAL CAREER Edward Jenner's route to immortality was not an obvious one. He began his medical career apprenticed to a surgeon in the Gloucestershire town of Chipping Sodbury before studying under the formidable John Hunter at St George's Hospital in London — a man whose advice to curious young scientists was essentially, "Don't speculate. Go and find out." Jenner took that instruction rather seriously.

Returning to his native Berkeley around 1773, he settled into the respectable life of a country doctor and surgeon. He treated generations of local families, investigated heart disease, and helped advance understanding of angina pectoris. Yet it was a piece of rural folklore, rather than anything from London's medical textbooks, that changed the course of history.

Country people had long noticed that milkmaids who caught cowpox seemed mysteriously protected from the far deadlier smallpox. Jenner investigated and discovered that the story contained a crucial grain of truth. On May 14, 1796, he conducted an experiment that would become one of the most famous in medical history. Using material taken from cowpox sores on the hands of a milkmaid named Sarah Nelmes — who had caught the infection from a cow with the wonderfully unscientific name of Blossom — he inoculated an eight-year-old boy, James Phipps. The boy subsequently proved immune to smallpox.

It sounds astonishingly simple now, but at the time many members of the medical establishment regarded Jenner's ideas with amusement, scepticism, or outright scorn. Some critics even suggested that vaccination might cause patients to develop bovine characteristics, which was an impressive feat of imagination even by eighteenth-century standards. Yet the evidence kept accumulating, and vaccination steadily won converts.

The consequences were extraordinary. In 1840, Britain banned variolation — the risky practice of deliberately infecting people with smallpox — and offered vaccination free of charge. 

Jenner's discovery soon travelled far beyond Gloucestershire. Between 1803 and 1806, the Spanish Balmis Expedition carried the vaccine across the Atlantic and around the world, immunising thousands throughout the Americas, the Philippines, Macao and China. 

It was one of history's most ambitious public-health campaigns, all stemming from a country doctor's willingness to take seriously something milkmaids had known all along.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS The variolation Jenner underwent as a child had a permanent adverse effect on his general health. He was otherwise described as a vigorous countryman throughout his adult life. (5) 

HOMES Jenner lived for most of his life at The Chantry, Church Lane, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, which is now the Jenner Museum. (6)

He also spent periods in London, particularly during the height of his campaigning for vaccination. He built a cottage near his Berkeley home for James Phipps, the boy on whom he had first tested his vaccine. (5)

TRAVEL His primary sphere of activity was always Gloucestershire, but Jenner travelled to London at various points in his career — notably in 1798 when he sought (unsuccessfully at first) to demonstrate vaccination to the medical community. (3) 

His vaccine,travelled the world without him: Napoleon's troops, the Spanish Empire's colonies, and ultimately the entire globe were reached by his discovery. 

DEATH Jenner was found in a state of apoplexy on January 25, 1823, with his right side paralysed. He never fully recovered and died on January 26, 1823, of an apparent stroke — his second — aged 73. (3) 

He was buried in the family vault at the Church of St Mary, Berkeley, Gloucestershire. 

APPEARANCES IN MEDIA Jenner has been commemorated on Royal Mail postage stamps, appearing in the World Changers issue of 1999 alongside Charles Darwin, Michael Faraday, and Alan Turing. 

A statue of Jenner was erected in Trafalgar Square and later moved to Kensington Gardens, London. Another statue stands in the nave of Gloucester Cathedral. 

A play, POX by Janet Bolam, was performed by the Cotswold Players in the garden of Jenner's house in 2025. 

 He featured in a BBC True Stories dramatisation recounting his life and discovery of vaccination. 

The lunar crater Jenner and the minor planet 5168 Jenner are both named in his honour.

Hirohito

NAME Emperor Hirohito (posthumously known as Emperor Shōwa)

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Emperor of Japan from 1926 until his death in 1989, Hirohito reigned during Japan’s imperial expansion, World War II, defeat, occupation by Allied forces, and the nation’s postwar transformation into a constitutional monarchy.

BIRTH Hirohito was born on April 29, 1901, at the Tōgū Palace (later sources say Aoyama Palace) in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan, during the reign of his grandfather, Emperor Meiji. He was the first son of 21-year-old Crown Prince Yoshihito (later Emperor Taishō) and 16-year-old Crown Princess Sadako (later Empress Teimei). He was the grandson of Emperor Meiji and Yanagiwara Naruko.
FAMILY BACKGROUND Hirohito was born into the Japanese Imperial Family, the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. His father ascended the throne in 1912 as Emperor Taishō after the death of Emperor Meiji. His mother was Empress Teimei (formerly Princess Sadako). The imperial family held both political and spiritual authority in Japan, with the emperor considered a descendant of the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu.
CHILDHOOD Following Japanese imperial custom, Hirohito was separated from his parents when he was just ten weeks old and placed in the care of Count Kawamura Sumiyoshi, who raised him as his grandchild.

At age three, after Kawamura's death, Hirohito and his brother Yasuhito returned to the imperial court—first to the imperial mansion in Numazu, Shizuoka, then back to the Aoyama Palace. This separation from his parents was a traditional practice designed to prevent the young prince from developing emotional attachments that might interfere with his imperial duties.
EDUCATION In 1908, at age seven, Hirohito began elementary studies at the Gakushūin (Peers School), an elite institution for children of the aristocracy. Emperor Meiji appointed General Nogi Maresuke as the school's tenth president and placed him in charge of educating his grandson. After Nogi's death, Hirohito's education was led by Fleet Admiral Togo Heihachiro and Naval Captain Ogasawara Naganari. 

One of his most influential instructors was Shiratori Kurakichi, a trained historian from Germany who taught positivist historiography and instilled in young Hirohito ideas about the divine origin of the imperial line and the myth of Japanese racial superiority and homogeneity. 

After graduating from the Gakushūin, Hirohito became the sole pupil at a special institute created specifically for him, where he was tutored in natural sciences, history, and military strategy and conditioned to become emperor. He was formally given the title of crown prince on November 2, 1916. 

During his teenage years, Hirohito discovered marine biology, which would become his lifelong passion. He even discovered a new species of marine life while still a teenager.​

In 1921, he became the first member of the Japanese imperial family to travel abroad, spending six months studying and touring Europe.

CAREER RECORD 1912-1926: Hirohito became heir apparent upon his grandfather Emperor Meiji's death on July 30, 1912. 

1921: On November 25, 1921, shortly after his return from Europe, Hirohito was appointed acting ruler of Japan (Sesshō) due to his father's mental illness.

1923: He joined the Imperial Japanese Army as a Lieutenant-Colonel and the Imperial Japanese Navy as a Commander (promoted to Army Colonel and Navy Captain in 1925).

APPEARANCE Hirohito was of slight build, standing approximately 1.65 meters (5 feet 5 inches) tall. He was known for his thick-rimmed glasses and, in his younger years, a neatly trimmed mustache.

There is a famous 1945 photograph with General Douglas MacArthur, where the 6-foot-tall American general towered over him. The height difference was intentionally used by the Americans to diminish the Emperor's mystique in the eyes of the Japanese people. Prior to 1945, photographs of the Emperor were always taken from carefully chosen angles to make him appear taller and more impressive. After the war, these constraints were removed, showing him as he truly was—a small, rather ordinary-looking man with a distinctive mustache.

​FASHION Hirohito's wardrobe evolved significantly during his lifetime, reflecting Japan's modernization and his changing role. During the 1920s, particularly during his 1921 European tour, he embraced Western clothing, including middle-class menswear such as sportswear and lounge suits, which signaled a shift in the relationship between monarch and subject. He had his suits tailored by the prestigious British clothier Henry Poole & Co. 

In formal settings, he wore traditional Japanese imperial court dress called sokutai, consisting of loose-fitting white trousers and a loose yellow outer robe decorated with patterns of Hō-ō (phoenix), Paulownia, Bamboo, and Kirin. 

For military and state occasions, he typically wore the uniform of Generalissimo of the Army, complete with military decorations. His adoption of Western-style clothing was part of a broader cultural shift in Japan during the interwar period. (1)
CHARACTER Hirohito's personality remains somewhat enigmatic due to his position and the secrecy surrounding the imperial family. According to those close to him, he was deeply dedicated to duty, following the example set by his grandfather Emperor Meiji, who believed that "working for the people was the essence of his existence." He did not seek to impose his will but strived to fulfill his sovereign responsibilities. 

Shy, reserved, and meticulous, Hirohito was known for being a man of routine and extreme formality, often appearing detached or stoic in public settings.

He developed a sense of entitlement and superiority due to his upbringing, but also showed moments of hesitation and concern, particularly regarding war. His reluctance to start the war with China in 1937 was documented, though he ultimately approved military actions. 

Hirohito was studious, and passionate about science. The extent of his true beliefs about his own divinity remains debated—he publicly renounced his status as a "god" in 1946, though the sincerity of this declaration has been questioned by historians.
SPEAKING VOICE He spoke in a high-pitched, formal, and archaic form of Japanese (the Gyokuon). Most Japanese citizens heard his voice for the first time on August 15, 1945, when he broadcast his surrender speech, known as the "Jewel Voice Broadcast" . The speech was delivered in formal Classical Japanese (kanbun kundoku-tai), an archaic and artificial language unfamiliar to most ordinary Japanese people. His voice was described as "muffled and nearly inaudible" due to poor sound quality in the original recording. When digitally remastered in 2015, his voice appeared "clearer, slightly higher and more intense," with a unique intonation that drops at the end of sentences. The difficulty in understanding him was compounded by both the formal courtly language and the poor audio quality. Many Japanese listeners struggled to comprehend whether Japan had actually surrendered, as the speech made no direct reference to surrender but instead stated that the government had accepted the Potsdam Declaration. Hirohito himself struggled to read the archaic text, which was as alien to him as it was to his listeners. (2)


SENSE OF HUMOUR Given the extreme formality of the imperial court and his role as a quasi-divine figure for much of his life, public displays of humor would have been considered inappropriate. However, his staff noted a dry, quiet wit in private, often centered around his scientific observations.

RELATIONSHIPS On January 26, 1924, Hirohito married Princess Nagako Kuni (later Empress Nagako, posthumously Empress Kōjun), a distant cousin of royal blood who had been selected through a rigorous process. The engagement was announced in January 1919 when Nagako was 16 years old. During their six-year courtship, they met only nine times and were always accompanied by a chaperone. Their marriage was delayed due to the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and an assassination attempt on Hirohito's life. 

Breaking with centuries of tradition, Hirohito decided to abandon the concubine system, making Nagako his sole consort despite tremendous pressure to take concubines when she initially bore only daughters. 

Their marriage lasted 65 years—longer than any other imperial couple in Japanese history—until Hirohito's death in 1989. 

Together they had seven children: five daughters (Shigeko, Sachiko, Kazuko, Atsuko, and Takako) and two sons (Akihito, who succeeded him, and Masahito/Hitachi). Under postwar law, three of their daughters lost their imperial status when they married commoners. 

Despite his devotion to Nagako, there are suggestions that she wielded considerable influence and that their daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Michiko, had a strained relationship with her due to Nagako's traditional views.

MONEY AND FAME Before World War II, Hirohito was considered one of the wealthiest men in the world. In 1945, his personal fortune was estimated at $106,041,000, comprising cash, stocks, securities, art objects, and vast real estate holdings including the Imperial Palace. However, after Japan's defeat, Allied occupation authorities stripped him of most of his wealth. The imperial estates and the emperor's personal fortune (estimated at US$17.15 million, or roughly $800 million in 2024 terms) were transferred to either state or private ownership, with the exception of 2,760 hectares of landholdings. 

When he died in 1989, Hirohito left approximately $15.4 million in stocks and savings accounts. His widow received half tax-free, while his son Emperor Akihito received the other half and had to pay approximately $3.6 million in inheritance taxes. Much of his art collection was donated to the state to avoid inheritance taxes. 

Since postwar reforms, the imperial family has been supported by an official civil list sanctioned by the Japanese government rather than personal wealth.
FOOD AND DRINK Hirohito would have been served traditional Japanese cuisine prepared by imperial chefs. The traditional Japanese diet (Washoku) emphasizes steamed rice, noodles, fish, tofu, seaweed, miso soup, and fresh vegetables, with small portion sizes and minimal added sugars and fats. Meals are typically presented in multiple small dishes with careful attention to visual appeal. Hot green tea or cold barley tea are traditional beverages. 

Hirohito was exposed to Western foods during state functions and his European travels. He famously enjoyed breakfast consisting of oatmeal, toast, and milk, a habit he picked up during his time in Europe in 1921.

MUSIC AND ARTS While he attended state performances and cultural events as part of his imperial duties, Hirohito's personal passion lay primarily in scientific pursuits rather than artistic ones. However, he did appreciate traditional Gagaku (court music) but also showed an interest in Western classical music

A radio was present in his personal quarters after his marriage, and he occasionally listened to broadcasts that interested him.
LITERATURE Hirohito's reading habits focused primarily on scientific literature related to marine biology, his passionate hobby. After dinner, his preferred activity was reading about biology, particularly Mendelism and marine biology topics, or working with his biological specimens. 

He published several scientific books and papers throughout his life, demonstrating his serious engagement with scholarly literature in his field. 
Emperors traditionally compose 31-syllable waka (tanka), and Hirohito followed this courtly practice, regularly contributing to New Year poetry readings and other occasions. ​

Recent discoveries include 57 pages of draft poems from 1985–1988 and “hundreds of poems” from the postwar period that reveal him reflecting on guilt, peace, war memories, and especially the natural world, showing that peace and nature were prominent themes in his work. (3)

NATURE From an early age, Hirohito developed an intense interest in the natural world, finding solace in nature as a shy introvert. His interests included Mendelism, marine biology, and the study of specimens he collected during walks through the palace grounds and visits to the seaside. He had a laboratory constructed in 1925 on the grounds of the Akasaka Palace where he could conduct his research, working closely with Dr. Hirotaro Hattori, the laboratory director. 

His first important scientific discovery was an unknown species of prawn in 1919 and throughout his life, he devoted significant time to collecting and studying marine specimens, particularly from Sagami Bay, focusing on hydrozoans (jellyfish-like creatures) and slime molds. 

Hirohito's passion for nature was so well-known that one of the postwar holidays initially created in his memory was called "Greenery Day" to honor his love for nature.
PETS Emperor Hirohito’s most famous companion was a striking white horse named Shirayuki, which translates to "White Snow." Though he became a symbol of Japanese imperial tradition, Shirayuki was actually an American stock horse purchased in California and shipped to Japan. Throughout the 1930s and into the early years of World War II, the stallion was a central figure in the Emperor’s public persona, frequently appearing in official photographs and propaganda newsreels. These images were carefully crafted to depict Hirohito as a majestic, divine leader, often showing him mounted on Shirayuki during grand military reviews at the Yoyogi Parade Ground.

Over the course of his service, Shirayuki made 344 official appearances with the Emperor, gaining such international notoriety that he became a target of Allied rhetoric. U.S. Admiral William "Bull" Halsey famously vowed that he would one day ride the Emperor's white horse through the streets of Tokyo. While Halsey did eventually ride a horse in Tokyo following the Japanese surrender, it was a different animal altogether, as Shirayuki remained the private property of the Imperial Household.

Shirayuki was eventually retired from his official duties in 1942 as the tide of the war began to shift. He lived out his remaining years in peace and passed away in 1947 at the age of 27. To honor his long service to the Crown, he was buried at the Shimōsa Imperial Stock Farm, marking the end of an era for one of the most recognizable animals in 20th-century history.

In 1914, Emperor Hirohito was given koi fish to keep in the moat of the Imperial Palace, which greatly boosted the popularity of these ornamental carp in Japan. 

HOBBIES AND SPORTS Marine biology was Hirohito's primary and most enduring hobby. He devoted each Monday and Thursday afternoon to his biological research, spending countless hours collecting specimens, conducting microscopic observations, and classifying species. His collecting expeditions often took him to the seaside, and he maintained an active research program throughout his life, even into old age. These small boat excursions for collecting may have provided a welcome escape from the many attendants required by royal tradition. 

Beyond his scientific pursuits, he occasionally listened to radio broadcasts and read newspapers. ​

SCIENCE AND MATHS Hirohito was a legitimate and accomplished scientist specializing in marine biology, particularly the taxonomy of hydrozoans (marine invertebrates related to jellyfish) and slime molds. His scientific work was far more than a royal hobby, it represented serious scholarly contribution. He published numerous scientific papers and books during his lifetime, with some works published posthumously.  In 1971, he was granted an elected Fellowship of the Royal Society, one of the world's most prestigious scientific organizations, in recognition of his contributions to marine biology. 

His taxonomic work on species from Sagami Bay and the Imperial Palace grounds provided valuable baseline data for understanding biodiversity and tracking environmental changes over time. Over 28,000 species were sent to his laboratory for classification. 

Hirohito's research has been cited by other scientists and contributed to the development of Dictyostelium (a slime mold) as a model organism in biological research. 


PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY Hirohito occupied a unique theological position as the supposed descendant of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, making him both a political and religious figure.  Until 1945, he was officially described as an arahitogami, a “manifest deity,” though this turns out to be a far subtler business than the Western notion of someone glowing faintly and accepting prayers before breakfast.

In Shinto thought, a kami is not so much a god as a heightened condition of being. Mountains can be kami. Trees can be kami. Even very impressive people may qualify. The emperor, then, was divine in roughly the same way a particularly excellent waterfall is divine—venerated, powerful, and not to be trifled with, but not necessarily expected to perform miracles on demand. Whether Hirohito himself believed any of this is one of those questions historians enjoy circling like polite wasps.

After the war, matters became awkward. On January 1, 1946, at the gentle but unmistakable urging of General Douglas MacArthur, Hirohito issued what became known as the Humanity Declaration (ningen-sengen), in which he denied being an akitsumikami—a manifest god—but stopped just short of denying that he was an arahitogami, a kami in human form. This was theological hair-splitting of the highest order, rather like announcing that you are not actually made of china, merely very breakable.

A month earlier, he had explained the distinction to his vice-grand chamberlain with admirable clarity: “It is permissible to say that the idea that the Japanese are descendants of the gods is a false conception; but it is absolutely impermissible to call chimerical the idea that the emperor is a descendant of the gods.” In other words, the myth could be trimmed, but not uprooted.

The declaration was largely aimed at Western audiences, many of whom were relieved to learn that the Emperor of Japan was not, in fact, a god walking about in uniform. In Japan itself, it caused remarkably little theological upheaval. People continued to bow much as before, just with slightly fewer metaphysical expectations.

Hirohito himself seemed to find the living-god mythology useful—particularly for encouraging obedience and military loyalty—while also finding it an uncomfortable weight to carry. His upbringing had instilled in him a quiet sense of inherent superiority, but Japan’s defeat in World War II shattered that certainty. The renunciation of divinity may have been the first moment he was allowed, publicly at least, to be something close to an ordinary human being—albeit an ordinary human being still living in a palace and being bowed to by everyone in the room.
REIGN Hirohito’s reign—known as the Shōwa era—ran from 1926 to 1989 and managed, with remarkable efficiency, to include almost every possible national experience short of a zombie apocalypse. It encompassed imperial ambition, catastrophic defeat, moral reckoning, and an economic revival so energetic that Japan went from ruins to robotics in the space of a few decades. Few reigns anywhere have covered so much ground without the monarch himself moving very much.

He became emperor on December 25, 1926, which seems an unnecessarily festive day to assume supreme responsibility, and remained on the throne until his death in 1989, giving him the longest reign of any Japanese emperor. The era name Shōwa is usually translated as “Bright Peace” or “Enlightened Harmony,” which in hindsight feels like naming a ship Titanic and hoping for the best.

Historians generally divide his reign into two large, uneven halves. Before 1945, Hirohito presided over a Japan defined by expansion, militarism, and war. After 1945, he became a largely symbolic figurehead in a pacifist, democratic state, spending the rest of his life opening things, greeting people, and very carefully not starting any wars.

The early Shōwa years coincided with economic depression, political chaos, and the steady rise of the army and navy, institutions that behaved rather like houseguests who quietly take over the living room and then begin rearranging the furniture. The military held effective veto power over civilian governments and was not above using assassination or intimidation to make its views known.

In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria. In 1937, it plunged into full-scale war with China. Eventually, Japan joined the Axis powers and embarked on a campaign across Asia and the Pacific. All of this was done in the emperor’s name, under a constitution that technically granted him supreme authority, though in practice decisions were driven by generals, admirals, and political elites with very loud voices. How much Hirohito personally steered events, and how much he went along with them, remains one of the great historical arguments of the twentieth century.

During World War II, Hirohito remained emperor as Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941 and fought a widening, increasingly desperate war. By August 1945, with the country devastated and leadership divided between surrender and annihilation, Hirohito intervened decisively. He backed acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and recorded a radio address announcing the end of the war. It was the first time ordinary Japanese citizens had ever heard their emperor’s voice, and it came as a surprise to many that he sounded, reassuringly, like a man.

After the war, under Allied occupation, Hirohito was not put on trial as a war criminal. Instead, he was retained as emperor, a choice made largely for the sake of stability and one that has been praised as pragmatic and criticized as morally evasive ever since. Japan was demilitarized, democratized, and restructured while he remained on the throne.

In 1946, Hirohito issued the Humanity Declaration, renouncing the doctrine that he was a living deity. A year later, a new constitution reduced him to a “symbol of the State and of the unity of the people,” stripping the throne of political power and transforming the emperor into something closer to a national emblem that occasionally waved back.

From the 1950s through the 1980s, Hirohito’s role was entirely ceremonial. He opened sessions of the Diet, received visiting dignitaries, and appeared in public with careful regularity while elected governments actually ran the country. During this time, Japan experienced extraordinary economic growth, emerging as a global industrial and technological power. For many Japanese, the Shōwa era came to represent both the trauma of wartime loss and the pride of postwar recovery.

Hirohito’s legacy remains unsettled. Some historians see him as a constrained monarch swept along by forces beyond his control; others argue that he was more complicit in Japan’s wartime aggression than postwar narratives allowed. What is not in dispute is scale. His 62-year reign framed a complete national transformation—from imperial aggressor to pacifist democracy—and the word Shōwa has become shorthand in Japan for the entire turbulent arc of the twentieth century itself.


POLITICS Under the Meiji Constitution of 1889, the emperor theoretically held supreme authority over the state and military. However, in practice, Hirohito's power was limited by oligarchs, ministers, and military leaders who structured the government to keep the emperor in a largely ceremonial role. 

Hirohito demonstrated political awareness and occasionally intervened decisively—most notably in suppressing the February 1936 coup attempt, when he even offered to personally lead troops against the rebels, and in making the final decision to surrender in August 1945 when his cabinet was deadlocked. 

After World War II, under the 1947 constitution, his role was explicitly reduced to that of a symbolic figurehead, "the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people," with no governmental powers. Nevertheless, he continued to receive regular political briefings and occasionally advised prime ministers behind the scenes. (4)
SCANDAL The greatest controversy surrounding Hirohito concerns his responsibility for Japanese war crimes and aggression during the 1930s and 1940s. These include the Second Sino-Japanese War (which killed over 20 million Chinese), the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, the use of biological and chemical weapons, the mistreatment of prisoners of war, the forced recruitment of "comfort women," and the attack on Pearl Harbor. 

Historical debate continues over the extent of his knowledge and complicity in these atrocities. Evidence shows he approved military actions, questioned generals about strategy, sometimes urged greater efforts, and issued imperial decrees authorizing operations. He was aware of "germ warfare" conducted in his name and approved the use of chemical weapons in China. However, he was never prosecuted for war crimes. General Douglas MacArthur, fearing that trying the Emperor would provoke a revolt or civil war, removed his name from the list of defendants at the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal. This decision has been criticized as perverting justice and preventing Japan from fully confronting its wartime responsibility. ​

MILITARY RECORD Hirohito held the highest military ranks in Japan. At age 11 in 1912, he joined the Imperial Japanese Army as a Second Lieutenant and the Imperial Japanese Navy as an Ensign. By 1923, as regent, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in the army and Commander in the navy, advancing to army Colonel and Navy Captain in 1925. Upon becoming emperor in 1926, he became Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Armed Forces, Generalissimo of the Army, and head of the military hierarchy. Under the Meiji Constitution, the armed forces were directly under the emperor's command, not the state's. 

In an unusual diplomatic gesture, in 1930 the British government honored him with the rank of Field Marshal, the highest rank in the British Army, making him a Knight of the Garter. This honor was rescinded in 1941 when Japan went to war with Britain but was restored during his state visit in 1971. 

Hirohito's actual exercise of military authority during wartime remains controversial—he participated in military planning sessions, questioned commanders, sometimes demanded specific operations, and approved strategic decisions, but the extent of his direct command versus ceremonial approval is debated by historians.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS He maintained a strict, healthy lifestyle for most of his life but suffered from digestive issues in his final years. On September 22, 1987, Hirohito underwent surgery on his pancreas after experiencing digestive problems for several months. Doctors discovered he had duodenal cancer (cancer of the first section of the small intestine) but initially refused to disclose this diagnosis to him as it was considered taboo at the time. He appeared to recover for several months, but on September 19, 1988, he vomited blood and collapsed. His health deteriorated rapidly over the following months as he suffered continuous internal bleeding. He received multiple blood transfusions and lost significant weight and died in early 1989.​​

HOMES Hirohito lived in various imperial residences throughout his life. As a child, he resided at the Tōgū/Aoyama Palace in Tokyo. As crown prince from 1913-1924, he lived at the Takanawa Residence. After his marriage in 1924, he lived at the Akasaka Palace, where he had a laboratory constructed in 1925 for his marine biology research. 

Upon becoming emperor in 1926, he moved to the Tokyo Imperial Palace (Kōkyo), which had been built on the site of the old Edo Castle. The palace complex contains multiple buildings including the Fukiage Palace (where he had his private living quarters), the main palace (Kyūden, used for ceremonies and receptions), archives, museums, and administrative offices. The grounds cover 1.15 square kilometers and include extensive gardens.

During his reign, parts of the Imperial Palace were damaged in World War II but were rebuilt. 

He also had access to the Kyoto Imperial Palace (technically still the "senior palace" of the monarch), several imperial villas including those at Nasu, Hayama, and Suzaki, and other imperial properties. 

TRAVEL Hirohito's most significant journey was his unprecedented six-month tour of Europe from March 3 to September 3, 1921, making him the first Japanese crown prince to leave Japan. He traveled aboard the naval ships Katori and Kashima, visiting Malta, Gibraltar, Portsmouth, London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Naples, and other cities. He met King George V and the British royal family, French and Italian prime ministers, King Victor Emanuel III of Italy, and Pope Benedict XV.

This trip, which he celebrated his 20th birthday during (April 29, 1921, near Gibraltar), made a profound impression on him—he consistently referred to it as "the happiest time in his life" and said his visit with King George V was "the most valuable lesson" he learned. (5)

After becoming emperor, his travels were more limited.  In 1971, Hirohito became the first reigning Japanese monarch to visit the United States. President Richard Nixon welcomed him at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, with full military honors.  In 1974, he visited the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. In 1975, he visited the United States, where he toured various cities and scientific institutions. These postwar visits marked a dramatic change from his wartime isolation and helped rehabilitate his international image.​

DEATH Emperor Hirohito died on January 7, 1989, at 6:33 AM at the Fukiage Palace in the Tokyo Imperial Palace, at age 87. He had been suffering from duodenal cancer and experienced continuous internal bleeding for several months. On that morning, members of the imperial family gathered at the palace, including Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko, after chief court physician Akira Takagi rushed to attend to him. The Emperor died less than an hour after the family assembled. 

His death was announced to the public at 7:55 AM by Grand Steward Shōichi Fujimori, who also revealed details about the cancer for the first time. 

He was buried in a white silk kimono, along with some favorite Western clothes (such as a suit and tie) and a few personal items like books and stationery placed in his coffins.

His death ended the Shōwa era, the longest imperial reign in Japanese history. He was succeeded immediately by his eldest son Akihito, and the Heisei era began the following day (January 8, 1989). 

Hirohito's state funeral was held on February 24, 1989, at Shinjuku Gyoen, attended by dignitaries from around the world. He was buried at the Musashi Imperial Graveyard in Hachiōji, Tokyo, near his parents. He was survived by his wife Nagako (who became Empress Dowager and lived until 2000), five children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.


APPEARANCES IN MEDIA Hirohito has been portrayed in numerous films, documentaries, and television programs about World War II and Japanese history. 

Notable appearances include the 1963 documentary biography Emperor Hirohito produced by David Wolper, the documentary Nanking (2007), The Sun (2005) portraying his final days of the war, The Emperor in August (2015) about the surrender decision, Midway (2019) where he was portrayed by Hiroaki Shintani, and the epic documentary series The World at War narrated by Laurence Olivier. He has also been portrayed in Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) and The Man in the High Castle (2015). 

The famous 1945 photograph of Hirohito meeting General MacArthur, taken by Gaetano Faillace, became one of the most iconic images of the postwar period, deliberately published to show the Emperor as an ordinary man rather than a divine figure. 

Archival footage of his 1921 European tour and his 1945 surrender broadcast have been widely used in historical documentaries. 

His life has been the subject of extensive biographical works, most notably Herbert P. Bix's Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan (2000), which won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 2001.

NAME Valerie Jane Morris-Goodall, better known as Jane Goodall.

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Renowned primatologist, ethologist, and conservationist, best known for her pioneering research on chimpanzees in Tanzania.

BIRTH Born on April 3, 1934, in Hampstead, London, England..

FAMILY BACKGROUND Her father, Mortimer Herbert Morris-Goodall (also known as Mortimer Herbert Goodall), was a businessman, well-known race car driver, and motor-racing enthusiast. Her mother was Margaret Myfanwe Joseph, a novelist who wrote under the pen name Vanne Morris-Goodall. Jane has one younger sister, Judy. 

During World War II, her parents divorced, and Jane, her mother, and sister moved to Bournemouth to live with her grandmother and aunts.

CHILDHOOD From a very young age, Jane was obsessed with animals. She was given a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee by her father, which sparked a lifelong interest in the species. She spent hours in her family’s garden in Bournemouth, England, observing and sketching animals and insects. At age 4, she famously disappeared for hours, later found in a henhouse watching hens to see how they laid eggs. Her family instilled values of honesty, compassion, and curiosity.

EDUCATION Jane attended Uplands School in Poole, receiving her school certificate in 1950 and a higher certificate in 1952. She left school at age 18 and worked as a secretary and waitress to save money for a trip to Africa. 

Though Goodall had no formal university education when she began her study of chimpanzees in 1960, her unprecedented observations were so significant that she was later admitted to the Ph.D. program in ethology at Newnham College, Cambridge University, in 1962. She was one of only a handful of people to be accepted to a Cambridge Ph.D. program without first having a Bachelor's degree. Goodall earned her Ph.D. in 1965.

FASHION Known for her practical, functional, and sustainable fashion choices, Jane Goodall favored comfortable, earth-toned clothes suitable for outdoor work and constant travel. She typically wore trousers and shirts rather than dresses, though she noted with humor that she did own dresses. Goodall was most often seen wearing simple khaki or neutral-colored clothing, comfortable shoes, and a collared shirt.

She was also an advocate for conscious and sustainable clothing.

CHARACTER  Jane Goodall was defined by her calm determination, immense patience, and profound empathy for all living beings. Compassion and gentleness shaped her approach to both animals and people, while resilience and perseverance drove her lifelong mission of conservation. Despite her global fame, she remained private and reserved, yet used her platform powerfully for activism. 

Known for her exceptional observational skills and scientific rigor, she also possessed a rare ability to connect with people across cultures and backgrounds.

SPEAKING VOICE Jane Goodall had a calm, steady, and gentle speaking voice, often described as a blend between a kind teacher and wise professor. She was known for her passionate, articulate, and persuasive speaking style, warming audiences with vivid, descriptive storytelling. She famously greeted many audiences with chimpanzee vocalizations, demonstrating the sounds chimps make in the wild.

SENSE OF HUMOUR Jane Goodall possessed a good sense of humor and took media portrayals of herself in stride. She laughed about her practical wardrobe choices and maintained a light-hearted approach despite the seriousness of her conservation work.

One of Gary Larson’s Far Side cartoons depicts two chimpanzees grooming, with one discovering a blonde human hair and quipping, “Conducting a little more ‘research’ with that Jane Goodall tramp?” At the time, Goodall was in Africa. The Jane Goodall Institute considered the cartoon offensive and had lawyers draft a protest letter, calling it an “atrocity.” However, when Goodall herself returned and saw it, she found the cartoon amusing.

Since then, proceeds from sales of a T-shirt featuring the cartoon have gone to the Jane Goodall Institute. Goodall even contributed the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, offering her perspective on the controversy, with the institute’s original letter reproduced alongside the cartoon in the complete Far Side collection. She praised Larson’s creativity, noting how his work often highlighted parallels between human and animal behavior.

Goodall often used self-deprecating remarks and amusing anecdotes from her time in the field to connect with her audience.

RELATIONSHIPS Jane Goodall married twice. Her first wedding took place on March 28, 1964, at Chelsea Old Church in London, England. She married Baron Hugo van Lawick, a Dutch wildlife photographer. They had a son, Hugo Eric Louis (nicknamed "Grub") in 1967.

Her second wedding was in 1975, when she married Derek Bryceson, a Tanzanian parliamentarian and director of the national park system, who helped establish Gombe Stream National Park. Their wedding took place in Tanzania.

Bryceson died of cancer in 1980. Jane has not remarried since then. Both husbands were supportive of her work.

MONEY AND FAME Through her research and National Geographic coverage, Jane achieved worldwide fame and recognition, gaining a significant platform which she used to advance conservation causes. 

She wasn't driven by wealth; her fame and resources were channeled into her non-profit organizations, the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots, to further her mission of conservation and education.

She received the 2021 Templeton Prize worth $1.56 million, which she pledged to use for her conservation projects.

FOOD AND DRINK Goodall  became vegetarian in the late 1960s after reading Peter Singer's Animal Liberation, realizing that meat represented "fear, pain and death". She transitioned to a vegan diet in the early 2000s. 

Her dietary choices were motivated by ethical concerns about animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and health benefits. She advocated for plant-based eating through her writing and activism, including co-authoring the cookbook #EatMeatless: Good for Animals, the Earth & All. (2)

LITERATURE Jane Goodall was an acclaimed author. Her famous works include In the Shadow of Man (1971) an autobiography of her early research, and The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior (1986), and more recently The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, which has been translated into over 20 languages. She also wrote numerous children's books and other non-fiction works related to her research and conservation efforts. Literature and writing have been central to her communication and teaching throughout her career.

RESEARCH AT GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK On July 14, 1960, a 26-year-old Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. She was armed with little more than a notebook, a pair of keen eyes, and the sort of patience usually associated with saints. What she achieved there would upend everything we thought we knew about animals, and, rather inconveniently, about ourselves.

Gombe lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, a body of water so long and thin it looks like someone dropped a piece of blue ribbon between the mountains. It would become the stage for one of the most extraordinary natural dramas of the twentieth century.

Goodall wasn’t just watching chimpanzees—she was living among them. She studied their social squabbles, their child-rearing foibles, their dietary habits, and even their occasional acts of brutality. Unlike her colleagues at the time, who insisted on numbering animals as if they were filing cabinets, she named them—David Greybeard, Flo, and Goliath among them—and in doing so reminded the world that personality wasn’t a strictly human privilege.

Her first great revelation came on November 4, 1960, when she watched a chimpanzee calmly strip a twig and poke it into a termite mound. Here was an animal making a tool. Up until then, the official definition of humankind had been “Man the Toolmaker.” In a single afternoon, a chimpanzee in Tanzania quietly rewrote the anthropology textbooks.

She also discovered that chimpanzees were not the gentle, fruit-munching vegetarians we had fondly imagined. They hunted monkeys, shared meat, and organized raids with the chilling efficiency of a small paramilitary unit. Yet they were also tender: mothers nursed and fussed over their young for years, friendships formed and endured, and grooming sessions carried the social importance of a cocktail party.

Her approach was revolutionary in its simplicity. She sat. She watched. She took notes. Sometimes for fourteen hours a day. Slowly, the chimpanzees grew accustomed to her, and eventually allowed her a kind of membership in their society—the only human ever afforded such a privilege.

What began as one woman with a notebook has become the longest continuous study of wild chimpanzees in history, more than six decades and counting. The work at Gombe has not only mapped out chimpanzee societies across generations but has also provided a rallying point for global conservation. It gave rise to the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots, programs that link human welfare, environmental stewardship, and the well-being of other species.

Today, Gombe is not merely a park but a living archive of animal behavior and a beacon for conservationists everywhere. Thanks to Goodall, we no longer see chimpanzees as curiosities in zoos or characters in cartoons, but as close kin, separated from us by a mere whisker of DNA and by a great deal of hubris.

NATURE Nature formed the core of Jane Goodall's identity and life purpose. From her early childhood passion for animals to her lifelong advocacy for environmental preservation, she found spiritual meaning in the natural world. She worked tirelessly for conservation and believed in the interconnectedness of all living things.

PETS  As a child, Goodall had a dog named Rusty, who was her loyal companion. She considered him to be one of her most important early teachers about animal personalities and communication. Her love for animals extended to playing with dogs when visiting friends.

HOBBIES AND SPORTS In her youth, Jane enjoyed horse-riding and outdoor activities. As an adult, her interests included long walks in nature, writing, and gardening when possible. However, her demanding travel schedule of 300 days per year left little time for traditional hobbies.

SCIENCE AND MATHS Goodall's work redefined the scientific approach to studying animal behavior. By using a more empathetic, long-term observational method, she pushed the boundaries of ethology and primatology, leading to new discoveries that were initially met with skepticism but are now widely accepted.

PHILOSOPHY & THEOLOGY  Goodall approached life with a pragmatic, spiritual philosophy that values hope, compassion, and environmental stewardship. Though raised Christian, she later described herself as spiritual rather than religious, believing in a guiding universal force encountered most directly in nature. She emphasized the importance of individual action and collective responsibility for the planet.

ACTIVISM Jane Goodall did something rather extraordinary in the mid-1980s. After spending a quarter of a century peering through binoculars at chimpanzees in the forests of Gombe, she looked up and noticed the rest of the world was on fire. Forests were disappearing, chimpanzees were vanishing, and humans were behaving with their usual mixture of short-sightedness and astonishing ingenuity. So she packed away the field notebooks and turned herself into a full-time, globe-trotting advocate for the environment—an unlikely second act for a shy Englishwoman who once preferred the company of apes to people.

Founded to continue her chimpanzee research in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute now operates in nearly 20 countries. It runs community programs across Africa, champions conservation, and provides proof that one determined woman with a ponytail can create an institution with the reach of a small multinational.

Goodall's global youth program, Roots & Shoots, began in 1991 with a group of 16 local teenagers meeting with her on her back porch in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, encouraging them to care about animals and the planet. It blossomed into a global youth movement with tens of thousands of groups in more than 100 countries. The result: an army of children planting trees, picking up litter, and gently shaming their parents into better habits.

Goodall’s name is also attached to projects ranging from the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Centre in the Republic of Congo (a sort of halfway house for apes) to TACARE, a program around Gombe that replants forests while helping local communities grow food sustainably. It’s conservation with a human face, and it works.

She spoke everywhere from classrooms to the United Nations about climate change and ecological collapse, at one point even working with NASA. She supported making “ecocide” a crime—legalese for wrecking the planet—and personally pledged to get five million trees into the ground, a goal she pursued with the zeal of someone determined to reforest half of Africa before lunch.

Goodall lobbied politicians, chastised corporations, and campaigned against airlines that ship animals like cargo. She traveled around 300 days a year, somehow managing to inspire people in school gymnasiums, parliaments, and international conferences without ever losing her patience—or her voice.

The results speak for themselves. Conservation is now as much about people as it is about animals, thanks largely to her. She empowered entire generations of children to believe they can make a difference. And she elevated the rights of animals and the health of ecosystems to subjects of mainstream conversation.

In short, Jane Goodall became something close to an environmental superhero. She didn't wear a cape—though she’d probably look rather good in one—but inspired millions with a message that is at once sobering and hopeful: that humans, if we put our minds to it, might just manage to save the planet after all. 

POLITICS While her second husband Derek Bryceson was a politician, Jane Goodall chose to focus her energy on conservation rather than formal political involvement. She used her platform to influence environmental policy and awareness globally.

SCANDAL Jane Goodall faced controversy in 2013 with her book Seeds of Hope, which contained plagiarized passages from various sources including Wikipedia, websites, and other publications. The book was delayed for corrections, and Goodall apologized for the "unintentional errors". (3)

She also faced criticism for her stance against GMO crops and gene editing, with some scientists arguing she strayed from evidence-based positions in areas outside her expertise.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL FITNESS Goodall had incredible energy and stamina, traveling over 300 days a year, even in her later years. She attributed her fitness to her vegan diet and purposeful lifestyle.

HOMES Jane Goodall grew up in Bournemouth, England, in her family's Victorian house, which she always considered her primary home and where she felt most connected to her childhood memories. She also had a home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where she lived with her second husband Derek Bryceson and was primarily used for work purposes. Her son Hugo ("Grub") lives in the Tanzania compound with his family.

TRAVEL Jane Goodall traveled extensively, spending approximately 300 days per year on the road for lectures, conferences, and conservation efforts. She maintained this demanding schedule ever since completing her field work at Gombe in the 1980s. Despite saying she "hates travelling," she continued this pace driven by urgency about environmental issues. 

During the pandemic, she became "Virtual Jane," conducting meetings and presentations online from her childhood home in Bournemouth.

DEATH Jane Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91, in California while on a U.S. speaking tour. She died of natural causes.

NAME Charles Robert Darwin

WHAT FAMOUS FOR Developing the theory of evolution by natural selection.

BIRTH Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, coincidentally the same day as Abraham Lincoln.

FAMILY BACKGROUND Born into a wealthy and influential family. His father, Robert Darwin, was a successful doctor known for his stern demeanor, while his mother, Susannah Wedgwood, was the daughter of renowned potter Josiah Wedgwood. Tragically, Susannah passed away when Darwin was just eight years old, leaving his three elder sisters to raise him.

Darwin's paternal grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was a naturalist, poet, and philosopher who proposed his own theory of evolution, which Charles later distanced himself from

CHILDHOOD From an early age, Darwin displayed a keen interest in natural history and geology. He spent countless hours collecting various specimens, including coins, birds' eggs, plants, pebbles, and beetles. However, his academic pursuits at school suffered as he increasingly devoted his time to outdoor activities like shooting, dog training, and rat-catching. This lack of focus greatly displeased his father, who famously lamented, "You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat-catching, and you will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family." Furthermore, his three elder sisters were frequent critics of his perceived lack of ambition and academic dedication.

As a child, Darwin was so passionate about chemistry that friends nicknamed him "Gas."

EDUCATION Darwin attended Shrewsbury School, but his academic performance suffered due to his fascination with shooting, dogs, and rat-catching. His father once lamented, “You care for nothing but shooting, dogs, and rat-catching and will be a disgrace to yourself and all your family.”

In 1825, Darwin began studying medicine at Edinburgh University but found the sight of human suffering unbearable. Two years later, he shifted to the University of Cambridge to prepare for a career as a Church of England clergyman. At Cambridge, he indulged in beetle-collecting, riding, and shooting while co-founding the "Glutton Club," where members dined on exotic animals like puma.

Under the mentorship of geologist Adam Sedgwick and botanist John Stevens Henslow, Darwin developed meticulous observational and collection skills. He eventually graduated in 1831, excelling in theology and passing in other subjects.

APPEARANCE Darwin stood at a towering six feet tall. Though he sported a less distinguished appearance during his school days, he later became known for his signature big, bushy white beard. 

His distinctive nose almost prevented him from securing a position as naturalist on the HMS Beagle. Captain Robert FitzRoy harbored concerns that someone with such a broad, squat nose lacked the fortitude and determination to endure the rigors of a long voyage of exploration.

CHARACTER Darwin was a gentle soul, possessing a kindness that extended even to the most insignificant creatures. He was also a remarkably modest and kind individual. 

He was a patient and meticulous observer with a highly analytical mind.

Darwin was admired by the crew of the Beagle for his intellect and amiable nature, and they affectionately nicknamed him "Philos." 

Darwin struggled with social anxiety, often finding himself uncomfortable in large gatherings. He was also known to stutter, which occasionally hindered his communication.

SENSE OF HUMOUR While Darwin's scientific work was serious, he occasionally injected humor into his observations. For example, he once quipped, "An American monkey, after getting drunk on brandy, would never touch it again, and thus was wiser than many men". 

Darwin's scientific curiosity extended to the phenomenon of humor itself. In The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872), he explored the biological aspects of emotional behavior, including laughter. He drew connections between human laughter and the reactions of apes to tickling, noting similarities in facial expressions and vocalizations

RELATIONSHIPS Charles Darwin married his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, at Maer Church in Staffordshire on January 29, 1839.

In his late 20s, Darwin experienced a period of intense introspection. He meticulously weighed the pros and cons of marriage, even creating a list with columns titled "Marry" and "Not Marry." Ultimately, he decided to pursue a life with Emma.

Their courtship, however, was not without its challenges. Despite his father's reservations, Darwin delayed proposing to Emma during his initial visit to Maer in July 1838. He did, however, share his groundbreaking ideas on transmutation with her.

Following a period of intense work and recurring bouts of illness in London, Darwin returned to Maer and finally proposed to Emma on November 11th. He once again discussed his revolutionary theories, which understandably caused Emma some concern.

In an attempt to alleviate her anxieties, Emma urged him to read from the Gospel of St. John, specifically "our Saviour's farewell discourse to his disciples," a passage that emphasizes the importance of abiding in faith. Darwin's warm and reassuring response soothed Emma's concerns, though a degree of apprehension regarding his radical ideas remained.

The couple finally wed in an Anglican ceremony at Maer that was also adapted to accommodate Emma's Unitarian beliefs.

Emma's family resided in the nearby Jacobean Maer Hall. The couple enjoyed a long and fulfilling marriage, though Emma did not share her husband's fervent interest in his scientific pursuits. Despite this, she remained supportive of his work, even if she found his experiments somewhat perplexing.

The Darwins were blessed with ten children, sadly losing three in infancy. Charles, ever the scientist, occasionally enlisted his children in his research endeavors.

Their sons achieved notable success in their respective fields: George became a renowned Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge, Francis pursued a career in botany, and Leonard distinguished himself as a Royal Engineer, a prominent figure in scientific expeditions, and even served as a Member of Parliament.

The couple also had two daughters, but the tragic loss of their daughter Annie at the age of ten deeply affected both Charles and Emma. This personal tragedy profoundly challenged Darwin's long-held belief in a benevolent God.

MONEY AND FAME Born into wealth, but his scientific work did not significantly increase his personal fortune.

Darwin's early career was a mix of triumphs and setbacks. Upon his return from the Beagle voyage in 1836, he was initially lauded in London for his groundbreaking geological discoveries. However, his initial account of the voyage garnered little public attention. This changed with the 1839 publication of his Journal of Researches (later known as The Voyage of the Beagle), which achieved significant commercial success.

Darwin's comfortable financial standing, derived from an inheritance of £5,000 per annum, allowed him to dedicate his life to his scientific pursuits without financial constraints. In 1842, he relocated to Down House in Downe, Kent, where he would spend the remainder of his life immersed in his research.

The publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859 catapulted Darwin into international stardom. The first edition sold out completely on the very first day, a testament to the book's immediate impact. During Darwin's lifetime, the book enjoyed immense popularity, with 35 printings in 11 languages. Today, its influence remains undeniable, with over 400 printings in approximately 30 languages. The enduring value of his work is further evidenced by the fact that a single leaf from Origin of Species fetched a staggering £45,000 at auction in 1999.

The enduring fascination with Darwin's work continues to this day, reflected in the substantial value of his publications and personal effects. In 2024, a rare first edition and author's presentation copy of On the Origin of Species sold for a remarkable £305,200 at auction, more than double its estimated value.

FOOD AND DRINK Charles Darwin's culinary habits were as diverse and intriguing as his scientific pursuits. He ventured beyond the ordinary, sampling a wide array of exotic dishes throughout his life.

During his time at Christ's College, Cambridge, Darwin's adventurous spirit manifested in his presidency of the "Glutton Club," a society dedicated to the culinary exploration of the unusual. This early foray into the realm of gastronomic experimentation foreshadowed his later culinary adventures.

Darwin's travels, particularly the voyage of the HMS Beagle, exposed him to a plethora of exotic flavors. He sampled armadillo, which he likened to duck, and savored iguana. He even declared a twenty-pound rodent to be "the best meat [he] ever tasted." Giant Galapagos tortoises also graced his palate, deemed "extremely delicious" by the intrepid explorer.

However, Darwin's scientific curiosity occasionally clashed with his culinary indulgences. On one memorable Christmas Day, he realized mid-meal that he was devouring a rare species of rhea, a bird he could have been studying instead of consuming.

Despite his penchant for the exotic, Darwin's daily routine in later life revolved around more conventional meals. He typically began his day with a solitary breakfast at 7:45 AM, followed by a substantial family lunch at 12:45 PM, which served as his main meal. A light high tea at 7:30 PM concluded his daily culinary routine.

Darwin's relationship with alcohol was complex. While he had a deep-seated "horror" of drunkenness, likely influenced by family history of alcoholism, he also enjoyed moderate alcohol consumption. He was, however, acutely aware of his susceptibility to even small amounts of alcohol, which he feared could overstimulate him.

Tobacco, particularly snuff, was a constant companion throughout Darwin's life. He began using snuff during his time at Edinburgh University and continued the habit throughout his life, despite occasional attempts at abstinence, such as during a hydropathy treatment in 1857. While snuff remained his preferred form of tobacco, he occasionally indulged in other forms as well.

MUSIC AND ARTS Following the initial lukewarm reception of his Beagle voyage account, Darwin experienced a notable decline in his appreciation for poetry and music. Despite this, he developed an intriguing theory, proposing that music evolved from animal mating calls and predated the development of human speech.

In his seminal work, The Descent of Man (1871), Darwin eloquently observed, "Human song is generally admitted to be the basis or origin of instrumental music. As neither the enjoyment nor the capacity of producing musical notes are faculties of the least use to man in reference to his daily habits of life, they must be ranked among the most mysterious with which he is endowed."

While his personal engagement with music may have diminished, he undoubtedly found solace in listening to his wife, Emma, play the piano compositions of renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn.

Despite lacking formal artistic training, Charles Darwin demonstrated a lifelong fascination with both art and photography, seamlessly integrating these interests into his scientific pursuits.

Darwin's appreciation for art blossomed during his time at Cambridge. He frequented art museums, delved into art history texts, and amassed a collection of artworks, particularly those with scientific relevance. He actively sought the expertise of renowned animal painters and sculptors, such as Thomas Woolner and Briton Riviere, to further his research on animal expressions.

Darwin enthusiastically embraced the emerging art of photography. He was an early adopter of the medium, sitting for a daguerreotype portrait as early as 1842. He actively collected photographs relevant to his research, scouring London's photographic studios for suitable images. Furthermore, he commissioned photographs specifically for his scientific work, most notably from the renowned photographer Oscar Rejlander for his seminal work, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin maintained an extensive correspondence with prominent figures in the photographic world, including Julia Margaret Cameron and Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), exchanging ideas and insights.

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872) stands as one of the first scientific texts to extensively utilize photographic illustrations. He pushed the boundaries of photographic technology, requesting images that captured the subtle nuances of isolated muscle contractions during various emotional expressions. Darwin's interest in photography extended beyond the realm of science. He enthusiastically participated in "carte correspondence," exchanging photographic portraits with colleagues and correspondents worldwide. He sat for numerous photographic portraits throughout his life, including memorable sessions with the renowned Julia Margaret Cameron, leaving behind a rich visual record of his life and legacy.

LITERATURE  A voracious reader, Darwin consumed a vast array of nature books and scientific texts. He maintained meticulous notes and journals throughout his life, particularly during his transformative voyage on the HMS Beagle.

Charles Darwin was a prolific writer, penning 19 books and 152 other publications throughout his illustrious career. While renowned for his groundbreaking scientific contributions, he surprisingly confessed in his autobiography to finding Shakespeare "intolerably dull" to the point of causing him nausea.

 Charles Darwin maintained a disciplined yet relatively light work schedule—typically about 4 hours a day—and on that routine, he produced some of the most influential scientific writing in history, including On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man. Here's what his typical daily routine looked like, especially during his most productive years at Down House in Kent:

Morning: Wake up around 7:00 a.m.

First work period (90 minutes): After breakfast, Darwin worked from about 8:00 to 9:30 a.m.

Second work period (90 minutes): After a short break, he worked again from around 10:30 to noon.

Midday: Walk: He often took a walk on his "Sandwalk" path (he called it his "thinking path").

Lunch and letters: Around 12:45, he had lunch and then read and answered correspondence.

Afternoon: Nap: Darwin napped for about an hour.

Second walk: Another stroll after his nap.

Third work period (60 minutes): Around 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., he returned to his study for a final session of reading or light work.

Evening: He spent evenings reading fiction aloud with his wife Emma, relaxing, or listening to music.

ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES AND THE DESCENT OF MAN His most celebrated work, On the Origin of Species, published on November 24, 1859, revolutionized scientific thought. Written in accessible language, it quickly gained international acclaim, translated into numerous languages worldwide. This landmark publication, born from years of meticulous research and contemplation, had languished in a broom cupboard for two decades before Darwin was spurred to publish upon learning that Alfred Russel Wallace, a young naturalist working in Malaysia, had independently conceived a similar theory of evolution.

Darwin, a meticulous wordsmith, agonized over his prose, constantly refining and revising his work. The result is considered one of the most lucid and impactful scientific treatises ever written. The book achieved immediate success, selling out on the first day of publication and undergoing five further editions during Darwin's lifetime.
